Actually an ies file consists of light values measured on a grid, these values are of course affected by caustics from the lens and reflector and shadows cast by the fixture itself.

its oke, but he stated something quite different than " we have at least some idea how the outcome will be" I know what is the purpuse of IES, no doubt very usefull, but it will be far from "correct" this is my point, nothing else. Even if its measured on grid, no renderes illuminate properly. (what I have seen so far, including lightsacpe and so on) I think everyone knows why. So I am not against using it...
