So here is my turntable test. It's working even when animated!
I used the denoiser and it's pretty low rez so that's why there is some dancing pixels. But just a test to see if it works. I used a model I'm doing in zbrush as an anatomy study but it's not detailed yet. This shader really makes me want to continue this anatomy study and add details to it. I hope to bring it to the level that you do Bigguns! At least it's my goal!

your SSS is way too strong for skin BTW ^^ . I really don't like the glow system of Vray, it blur's the whole image! instead of blurring only where highlight and bloom -glare appears... it should work like in Maxwell or back then Fryrender ( it was awesome! ) it was realtime, while it was rendering, I could choose my map of glare while it was rendering, adjust the power of glare and glow, was looking amazingly realistic! After alsurface and the 2d displacement, Vlado, you should fix that glow and glare stuff, I don't like it, it blur's the whole image.. BTW Jstrob, I unchecked Embree and it render faster and no more freeze! So Vlado, there is a bug in that Embree stuff :SLast edited by Bigguns; 01-08-2016, 04:27 PM.

The glow was made in comp, not V-Ray, but you are right the V-Ray glow and my comp glow are not realistic enough. Did you try Fstorm? The glow is amazing (see here). Many people are asking chaosgroup to improve V-ray glow after seeing Fstrom results.
My mext step is to detail the mesh, create textures and hair and then, create proper shaders, litghting and pose.Last edited by jstrob; 01-08-2016, 06:15 PM.

Gosshhh! now I'm trying to render this in HD and at first all the frame were stucking on last bucket. I deactivated the denoiser and now I get failling frames all over. Anyway I will find a way to debug this. At first I was in max 2017 but I saved my scene to 2016.
Max 2017 is so broken. I am trying to migrate since months and got so many bugs. I wonder if can migrate before max 2018...

It's not only Autodesk, in my case I can't find any solution to create passes that works. I use RPManager but important features do not work in max 2017 yet. So I tried the max state sets and they are always almost as buggy as years ago. There are other plugins around but I'm tired of spending all my money on plugins that breaks at every new version.
Now I know max will die like Softimage. That's why I'm learning Houdini (as well as Blender) and hoping Chaosgroup concentrate their effort on V-Ray for Houdini: that is the future! It's sad but true.

Ouin,
Finally I can't render in HD with the Alsurface yet. V-Ray get stuck on the last bucket for all frames even when is Embree is off. I merged my assets in a new max 2016 scene to get rid of any bug from max 2017.
But when rendering in HD with the SSS2 shader in the same exact scene, V-Ray doe not stop on the last bucket.
So we have to wait for Vlado to see if he has any idea why.
edit: Though I still have to try with the denoiser off cause before it was failing because of max 2017 bits still in the scene I think.,..Last edited by jstrob; 02-08-2016, 05:35 AM.

Max is strong with archviz but once people know they can do as good archviz with Blender and Houdini, for a fraction of the price, they will probably switch. It's just a matter of time. You only have to understand a bit how the development of those softwares works compare to the dev at Autodesk and it becomes obvious. For any programmer, I think it's a lot easier to add a features to Houdini than add one to max (maybe there's stuff I don't know about this so I maybe wrong but that's my impression). It's also easier for anybody who have a good idea to add it to Blender. Max is lot more prone to bugs in the pipeline just because it relies so heavily on third parties plugins. Max also only survives because of his plugins, the most important one being V-Ray. If V-Ray could be as well implemented in Houdini than it is into max (with same speed, the Alsurface shader, RT, denoiser and all) that would be the game changer for me at least!Last edited by jstrob; 02-08-2016, 06:00 AM.

I like the tool and I like the development team but I don't like the companies attitude to either. The likes of houdini and blender are driven by different purposes though - houdini is run by a team of clear purposed engineers that care about the program only, likewise blender is driven by the community. 3dsmax is driven by what autodesk management will allow and they're driven by shareholders who only car about a return :/
