  • FOG - Operation

    Hi Forum,

can anybody help me with the Environment Fog settings?
I´m trying to create a fog like in this Photo.

No matter what I do I dont even come close the the mood of the picture.
I thought a noise in the Fog Transparency > Texture slot could bring me to the goal but it seams that nothing happens if I use a Noise.
Did I forgot something or do anyone know a Tutorial where I can learn to handle the Fog Tool?

    Thanks for any help.
    Rick

Im not sure how to get the detail and density youre after with env fog, but I was playing with it today to get some smokey stuff surrounding area lights. This was in Maya but I plugged 3d textures into the fog colour instead of transparency. It took way way longer to render connected to transparency. I also had to spend a while dialing in the scale of the noise as by default it can come in way too small which also kills the render time.

I increased the Noise to 500% still no change, do I need to increase more?

      OK, I found a solution.
A Noise in FOG Density (not in FOG Transparency) works BUT I have to increase the noise 20000% and higher

I was using Maya, so Im not sure how it translates to cinema 4d...but if I used one noise, it needed a scale value of 40, if I used a different one, it needed a scale value of 0.1. So it really depends on the type of noise youre plugging in. I would make a very simple scene first, of just a light in some fog, and just get the system working on a very small and fast test scene. Attached is a screen grab from my test scene...it looks nothing like what youre trying to do, but I needed to try a lot of different scales to get one that worked. You could also plug in a checker material in the fog so you know for sure that the effect is working.

          Hi Rick,

here is a quick test, I've scattered a few trees from Cosmos library over a landscape object, for the fog I use some free clouds VDB files.
In case you want to try this option remember to rise the render/shadows step percentage to speedup the render

Mapping fog density was so much slower than mapping the colour, but if it works for you, thats cool!
