  • [PHI-5937] Subsampled VDB Velocity

Does subsampled vel work with VDBs yet?

  • #2
    Hey Dubbie99 ,

Apologies for the late reply - I just now saw the thread while browsing the forum.
The R&D team have been busy working on anisotropic scattering and support for render elements in Volumetric mode - we still haven't had the chance to add subsampled vel support.

In case it's the look that is produced with a subsampled velocity channel that you are after, you could use the VDB Smooth SOP to give the velocity channel a couple of smoothing iterations.

    Hope that helps!

It's more about that downsampled velocity significantly reduces the cache size.

        Hristo is right.

You can cut your cache sizes to less than 1/3 the size by subsampling the velocity with virtually no effect on the render.

Uncessesarily large caches are very expensive in disk space and time.

I think this should be treated as a high priority item. It will help more people than the other features (Although they will be very welcome too!)

I asked for this a while back. So hopefully it gets done now.
