  • baking a 360 HDR onto primitives?

    Hi,

I feel like this should be simple but am having a hard time..

I have projected an HDR onto primitive Planes and would like to bake them as textures or somehow make them 'stick' so that I can move the planes around my scene. (my HDR was shot in the center of a warehouse, and I would like to move some walls/ the ceiling for better reflections)

I've used a 3d projection node to do the projection, got it looking good, but just can't seem to figure out how to bake it out as a texture.

I assign bake options to my plane, then go to bake it and select 'selected objects only' and tick on 'projection baking' and then nothing happens.

I've also tried in my BakeOptions under Projection Baking ticking on 'Closest' for mode, and ticked on 'Assign Target Set' but that didn't seem to make a difference.

    Any help would be appreciated!

"Projection baking" doesn't refer to baking 3D projected textures, but to baking shading from one object onto the geometry of a different object, like this. I'm guessing it should bake fine if you just disable that. It's a good practice to always check out the documentation for the check-boxes you tick, especially if something isn't working

      Thanks, I am getting closer!

Now it renders but just renders a solid color.

I am uploading a test scene here, if you or anyone could take a look at let me know what I am missing I would REALLY appreciate it!

      Cheers

I think you just need to skip the placeEnvTex node, as you're doubling the projections. EnvPlaceTex already sets it as spherical, then the maya projection sets it as spherical again.
Just have the file node go straight to the maya projection node and it should be fine (place2d > file > projection > shader).

Absolutely correct and the example perfectly illustrates it!

Thanks for the suggestion Yolov. It seems to like the EnvPlaceTex, here are RT and Bake results from trying with and without the PlaceEnvTex node.

well at least with Yolovs suggestion the Bake Result looks like what I was seeing in RT. So I suppose that's a start? Is there a way to project onto geo without the PlaceEnvTex node properly without it being stretched to kingdom come?

Which is which in the examples? 1/2/3 ? I'm getting a bit lost here

I'm a little ashamed to admit that I stole those example images from the Clarisse documentation. Maybe something similar in the Vray docs would prevent confusion in the future

yolov ov I was worried that might look confusing haha. The images have file names that describe what they are, if you hover your mouse over them. Also I wrote what each picture was :P

Yes, but they just say "Project_1_BakeResult" and I find it hard to figure if that is with placeEnvTex, which one is without it and what does RT bake have to do with it

                            Okay let me try again.

You suggested to unplug the PlaceEnvTex Node.

Here is what happens when I do that. It looks all stretched out.

Is there a way to project it onto the geo without it being stretched, and without using the PlaceEnvTex node?
