  • Mapped reflection glossiness not working in Maya 2022.1

    Hi folks.
Can anyone help with this issue I have.
I think it's to do with ACES in Maya 2022.

If I plugin a texture node to the reflective glossiness I cant get the same effect I had in Maya 2020.
I use a map to get some simple roughness in the corners of my window, I have modelled 60 buildings so far in Maya 2020 and the workflow works and renders just great. But now in Maya 2022.1 I just cant get the same effect in the viewport or in the render. I'm using latest nightly build on win64.

    Not really a help:

Works here - using 2022.1 and 5.1.0.2 with ACES workflow.

Hi Seq, can I ask what your viewport color management is set to in Maya 2022?
I can only get it to work in Maya 2022 if the viewport is set to "sRGB gamma (legacy)". by opening a Maya 2020 scene file it switches to legacy.
I have Maya colour management set to "aces_1.0.3/config.ocio" with input color space set to "Utility - sRGB - Texture.

          Hi Stezza,

we use the 1.2 version with Maya 2022.1. My colleague have created a modified (reduced) version of the Maya default one and we just replaced the one under the path you see in the screenshot.

She also wrote a small script that changes the Color Space for each texture depending on its use (diffuse, bump etc.).

Must say that especially the light is so much more brilliant and complex with ACES - it is fantastic.

          Hope that helps.

Seems to work fine on my end as well regardless of the set color space. Does it happen in every scene? Just in case - is the "Textured" viewport preview (shortcut 6) option checked?

Well I managed to get it working. The exported images from Substance Painter "RGB 8bit png's" was causing the issue. I converted them to jpeg and it worked. strange!

Hi seq. Any chance you could ask you colleague for any tips regarding automated textures color space conversion?

From what I know, any texture with color information is suppose to be in Utility srgb, and all the rest including normal maps in RAW.

Could I follow a specific naming scheme for each texture file and Maya would read it and convert it automatically?

You can add input color space rules in maya prefs, based on texture names if this is what you mean.

                  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6BRawQNwO8

                  around 12mins in.

If you use the default ACES 1.2 ocio config file then you will probably get quite a bit of lag when changing these rules, (maybe not tho) But luckily Muhammed came to the rescue by sharing his cut down version, which works great for me.

                  Its in this forum post

                    Hi Karol,

I will ask her. If I understand her right, the script changes the Color Space in the file node regarding to which attribute the texture is connected (Diffuse, Reflection, Bump...) and it enables "Ignore Color Space File Rules".

We use also use a cut down config file as the default ACES 1.2 config file is too overcrowded. Will ask her if I can post it here, but I guess it will not differ much from the one from Muhammed.

The color space rules you can set in Maya seems to be the cleanest way, but of course means that everyone needs to follow the name convention strictly.

                    Best,
                    Lars

                      Hey everyone

Not sure, if it's the same problem, but seems to be pretty similar.

I'm testing Maya 2023.2 with vray v5.20.02 and since vray 5.x and this ACES workflow, I have massive problems with my textures. Especialy with the black/white maps for glossiness.

Vray doesn't see them at all (in viewport is all fine). I tried to switch back to legacy, but I dont get the problem and how to solve it.

In my old vray 4, everything is working perfectly.

                      Here is a simple example:

a simple maya checker texture as a glossiness map and in the vfb you see nothing. Not even in the pass. Always 100% glossiness.

The same problem with all my black/white textures (jpg) for the glossiness.

For reflection color it works also fine with monochrome maps, but this is not a solution for my problem.

                      Added:

I found out, that single jpgs are working for reflection glossiness, but layered texture doesn't work at all (VrayLayeredTexture isn't working can't be even piped in for Glossiness only for reflColor).

                      Any Ideas?

                      Tanks in advance!!!

That's because the Glossiness channel is also mono (black and white), hence you can only plug a single channel into that slot. If you open the node editor (or hypershade) and plug only a single channel (either r, g or b) in the glossiness slot, it will work.
As for the first issue make sure the checker's "Alpha is Luminance" is active.
