  • Nature Environment Question

I usually use the Unity game engine to do offline rendering of scenes where trees and terrain are needed but I'm looking into using V-ray for Maya as an alternative. What tool(s) would I need to create a nature environment with trees, grass, terrains, rivers, etc.?

Maya MASH is all you need.

Yes go with Mash while we wait for Vray scatter, Mash is easy to use , it just have a small glitch with the mash window when sometimes the nodes don’t get added or instances IDs disappear, you just need to close the window and reopen. Also it will be much more photorealistic than in game engine plus you have the Cosmo library at your fingertips.

I did read that vray scatter isn't being ported over to maya!

Stuff already built into Maya. I like it.

Do anybody know where to trees, bushes, grass, etc.? In Unreal I was using Megascans.

You can use any vegetation mesh you can find, either free ones from Maya , Vray or the internet.
Vray scatter is not implemented in Maya but hopefully in the near future.fingers crossed.

Any recommendations on forest packs that can be used with Vray?

Any recommendations on tools that can create terrains and import into Maya? I've scene World Creator and that looks good but was wondering of any others.

There's no such thing for Maya but you can use the tree collection from the Vray Cosmos Browser in Vray 5.
I use World Machine but Gaea and Houdini are another option for terrain creation.
Here is a desert terrain but no trees.

I have some packs from Laubwerk (for the tress). It works very well with Maya/Vray and the plugin is clever.
For the terrains, you have several solutions but I as far as I know there is one "one click" solution.

We've been using Mash for the past 3 years at the studio where I work at. Mash is a pain to work with if you scatter more than a few instances (depending on the asset). It's not made for scattering but for motion graphics. Besides that Mash is still very buggy and slow.We urgently need vray scatter and Chaos Group better get on it asap. Vray scatter for Maya will be welcomed with open arms!

There's plenty of tree and other types of vegetation assets in Chaos Cosmos, built into V-Ray for Maya.
The assets are proxies and you can use them with MASH as shown in Carlos's tutorial a few posts back.

As for scatter - it's in our development plans to add it to Maya.
