  • Light Instancing V-Ray Scatter

Does anybody know if there is a tutorial to create scatter effects like the one shown in the help documentation?

HI, this image shows the new feature of the Chaos Scatter, the ability to scatter lights. I am not sure how exactly it was made but by looking at it it seems like a lot of very small lights scattered with random translation.
Here is a small scene showing the light scattering:

There is also this short video showing the build process of the image you referenced. The lights scatter is not shown though. - https://www.youtube.com/shorts/22BO7uTbbx8

It works with LightMix's instanced lights mode. In the example below I have two Chaos Scatters, each scattering a VRayLight. The lights are copies, one is red, one is blue. The LightMix groups them in the same way as instanced lights.

ok - sorry - I obviously missed the fact this is Maya thread.

in my case (3dsMax) scattered lights are saved into Rest VRayLightSelect (created automatically by VRayLightMix) when the original light is on a hidden layer. all works as expected if original light is visible.

I'm also one hotfix behind - might be relevant here.

Here I have two scatters and a dome light. As you can see they switch on and off properly.

does it still work like that when the original lights is on a hidden layer? or do scattered lights go to “rest” layer in than case?

I am not sure what is your setup exactly. I tried to move the light in a separate layer and turned it off. Light MIx still works and nothing is visible in the rest layer.

thank you for testin this - it must be my previous hotfix causing issues then.
                    much appreciated.
