  • Nightly Build Hairshader #3

I have been doing some tests with the new hair shader3, but I am not having much luck in terms of spec control for the primary spec.

All spec controls seem to be very touchy in terms of spec amount and color. When I bring up the primary spec it seems to reflect a tremendous amount of the environment causing me to keep the spec level very low and add a V-Ray physical sun to kick the highlights without washing the hair with reflection. I have a domelight and physical camera using physical camera to attenuate the HDR.

I was hoping you could give some tips for controlling the shader if possible. Here is a quick test render.

There isn't much to it, there are three spinners in total - it doesn't get much easier than that We will be adding a few presets though.

Usually the primary specular is very sharp for shiny hair, the secondary less so, and then some transmission. There is typically no diffuse component in hair.

    Best regards,
    Vlado

Hmm what lights are you guys testing it with? Perhaps something is off when using a dome light. If I only use primary and bring up the spec, it makes the hair look metallic from it reflecting the entire environment. I will have a closer look, and if anything send you the scene file.

      Thanks

Ok.. You are right.. It's actually really easy. Obviously we need to comb her hair.. But look at the settings.. I just add a little primary and I have black hair?

That's it? How do you bring up the highlights without pulling up the overall reflection of the hair? If I bring the hair primary up anymore than what's posted, it gets metallic. Kind of reminds me of Maria.. Hehehe

What are you using to generate the hair. Vray fur? Maya hair?

              that looks awesome Scott!
how long did you render take? I tried a similar sized render with Maya's hair example with the hairshader #3, and Maya+V-Ray just stalled on the third prepass forever.

Yeah I was wondering this to, and what sort of sampling settings were you using? I had a quick play but was getting some very noisey results, I didn't know if I just needed to crank the settings up or was there another trick. Cheers

The hair is generated from curves via Maya Hair. On a Single CPU with 6cores at full HD with ADMC of 1/100 threshold 0.005 Primary GI was Irradiance Map, secondary Lightcache.

With Physical camera DOF the front render was 20minutes at 1920x1080, and 30 minutes for the back of the hair.

So awesome to see a hair shader in vray for maya..

Just wondered if this will work with Joe Alters shave and a haircut too?

Also what's the rough setup process in order to get this shader to work?

                        Thanks in advance...

How about the visibility in reflections? for now it's not shown. Right?

                            create from vray-plugin->Shader->Hair
create mayaHair and add vray attribute HairShader to the hairSystemShape
connect the created BRDFHair to the HairShader Attribute
                            play with it =)

                            and to shave and haircut:
I'd say you cannot use it with shave. (just with the convert guides to nurbsCurves and use them as HairGuides for MayaHair) But that´s not nessecary. Joe has just updated shave to work with vray2 some days ago. just give it a try.. seems to be a lot faster now.
maybe the chaosgroup guys and joe will find a way to get it work with each other.. I have no idea if it is better or even nessecary..!? Haven't tested too much with both yet.
