    play with it =)
There is an even easier way:
    1. Select the hairSystemShape node in the Attribute editor
    2. Attributes -> V-Ray -> Hair shader
    3. Goto the Extra V-Ray Attributes and click the checker icon
    4. Then select the V-Ray Mtl Hair 3

In order to accelerate self shadowing of Hair, VRayShadowMap is recommended,
but is VRayShadowMap implemented in VRayMaya?

        For the moment - no.

Thank you for the new hair shaders!

Apart from the shadowmap are there any recommended work flows for rendering hair?

I have read that some people have had success using photon mapping, but I wonder if there is any specific optimizations made in the hair shader that we can use to reduce flicker and rendering time.

            Best,
            Leo

Yes, but I did not quite follow how to wire the nodes together? Can you maybe send me a scene?

              Best regards,
              Vlado

Unfortunately interpolated GI solutions tend not to work too well because the fine details in the hair add a lot of flickering. It might be better to use brute force + light cache + light cache retrace. It was not that slow in my tests.

How do you connect the nodes in order to add vrayHair to the hair system ?

There is just the VRayHair3 material, which you can connect to an existing Maya Hair shape.

                      Best regards,
