  • Vray fur pipeline

I have a job coming up next year that will require me to do a lot of fur rendering.

Right now, we are trying to figure out a vray/shave pipeline. Shave purports to be compatible with vray but I haven't seen much evidence of that so far.
I've been following a lot of the shave threads here on the choas group forums and am a little confused as to the state of the vray/shave pipeline. Last I heard they were supposed to support each other but shave wasn't set up to take the vray hair shader or any other vray shader? Is that accurate?

Is there any way to assign a vray shader to the shave hair? Can you get good renders of the shave hair using its default shave shader?

I'd be very grateful for any insight you might be able to shed on using vray to render dynamic fur (we've tried vray's fur and while it looks good, we need it to be more interactive).

I had some nice results using the default S&H default material. So it is possible.
The other alternative if you want to use the VrayHairhader is yeti.

      Yeah, we're looking into yeti.
So, am I to take this to mean that shave can't use the vray hair shader yet?

I think 6.072 doesn't support it. I've heard rumors that some of the 7.x.x versions support it.
Generally we've made shave&haircut to work with both VRayMtlHair3 and RT and we've sent the code to Joe Alter, now it is up to him to integrate it.
We can't do anything more about this issue.

Hmmm. Well we are working with Shave 7.0v10 and as far as I can tell there isn't any support for applying any other materials to the hair.
Which is too bad since we'll probably have to find another hair solution. Yeti perhaps as Yannick suggested.

Yeti is 10 times better than shave so don't feel bad about changing your fur solution We've done several projects with vray/yeti now and the results are always amazing realism.

when you say 10 times better, what is it that you find so much better about it? not knowing yeti, I'm just curious about what makes it a better solution?

Well it has everything you could ever want from a fur solution. Since it's node based it's very powerful and you can do some really cool stuff that wasn't possible before. You can create any attributes yourself, and use textures to control them. The grooming works really good, and you have camera based combing (finally!). You can apply any shader to the fur and it works with renderlayers.
And you can use corrective grooming to fix problem areas, and the list goes on and on A full list of yeti's feature can be found on their front page: http://peregrinelabs.com/yeti/

There are also a lot of cool stuff in the works with the next yeti version which I look forward too. Not sure if that info is public yet so I wount say what, but it's gonna be awesome

                  Yes!

Yeti is awesome. Just be carefull with small/thin hairs (this can crash VRay during rendering).

Never crashed for us. If it's a bug just report it and you will get a fix asap. Their support works similar to chaos group, instant bug fixes.

Someone sent a bug report, it is discussed here (you need a login to see the thread) :

In order to fix it, the Yeti team is asking for a maya scene that shows this problem.
If the file is small you can send it to support (at) peregrinelabs.com
If it's a big file (I don't know where is the limit), they can provide an sftp.

                      Cheers.

We used the 1.2 beta, so maybe this was our fault The 1.1.8 was a lot more stable, but also much slower to work with.
During the production we found about 10 bugs concerning VRay and Yeti, all of them are fixed

So yeah, the support is really good.
