I installed the phoenixFD demo and with the newest nightly build I´m able to switch to phoenix FD shaders in the added fluid properties. Is there any documentation how to optimize the settings?
Rendertimes are still huge compared to Maya Software or MentalRay :/
I´d love to render the fluids with vray without being dependent on shitty MR.

If I save out a vrscene with a fluid I searched for environmentfog AND Pheonix shader. I found this line "EnvironmentFog fluidShape3@volume" but nothing about pheonix shader. I'm guessing it using the environementfog shader still.

I'm also using vray for maya 2.1 with maya 2012. I might have access to vray 2.2

          2.1 is too old.

Both shaders do not support natively maya fluids, so there is some penalty with this. Otherwise the only quality setting is the step size and using light cache. The samper settings may play a big role if you have emission. The emissive part of the fire can become overbright and the sampler will produce it's maximum amount of samples at that places. If you have a problem getting reasonable rendering time, we can take a look of the particular scene.

I guess you mean the original 2.1 from almost a year ?
Because the latest stable builds available a month ago are still called 2.1 :
              V-Ray for Maya version 2.10.01, revision 22419 from Oct 5 2012.
              V-Ray: V-Ray core version is 2.00.01

And the same stable builds are supposed to be the best with Phoenix, according to this thread :

For Phoenix FD, yes. But for Maya fluids, it's different. We will port the respective changes to the next official service pack, but for the moment, the nightly builds will work a lot better for the Maya fluilds + Phoenix FD combo.

                Best regards,
                Vlado

Are you saying that 2.1 won't use the pheonix shaders at all? Currently when I write out a .vrscene its says its using "environmentfog" as the shader as far as I can tell. Will it work with 2.2?

Let me do some more careful tests and I'll let you know what works with what.

You need 2.2 and above for the Phoenix shader. If you want to choose the shader, you need a nightly.

I'm playing with this right now and the phoenixFD shader is really very fast, nice!
But when I render maya fluids with the phoenix shader and try to enable a velocity render element I get a warning during rendering and the frames are not correct. The warning says that it needs a velocity channel when using motion blur, but I have no clue how exactly I can get around this. I think the velocity from the maya fluid needs to get propagted to the phoenix shader, right? If so, how can this be done? Velocity is a dyn grid on my fluid, so the information exists somehow, I guess.
Or does it mean something totally different?

                            Thanks!

Ignore this warning. At some point Phoenix shader was doing the motion blur. In the recent builds, this is done by VRay. There were a lot of changes with the motion blur, up until yesterday actually .

So I need the nightly to be able to actually use the shader for rendering or the nightly is just providing the GUI option? I am running the official 2.30.01 on Maya 2013 and Phoenix demo. With the "ue light cache" option enabled, does that mean I am using the Phoenix shader?
                                always curious...
