I'm testing with vray 2.2 now and I don't see any speed up in rendertime. If I right out a vrscene then open it up it still says "EnvironmentFog fluidShape3@volume " . how I can I know for sure if its using the pheonix shader with 2.2

The nightlies have additional attribute to choose manually the shader, 2.2 and 2.3 use Phoenix if it can be found. If Phoenix is used for rendering you will see something like this in the oputput window:

[2012/Nov/15|11:15:25] V-Ray: [PhoenixCachePlugin] Frame data successfully loaded from .
      [2012/Nov/15|11:15:25] V-Ray: [PhoenixSimPlugin] grid 10x10x10, time 0.

R_Cyph, what is the content of the Output Window?

Here is the the ouput window when I render a fluid .

Currently we're using the full version of Pheonix FD, not the demo. BUT, our LA branch is using the licences for pheonix. If I just try and sim with pheonix I get a " cannot obtain license " error. Would that be causing the problem with rendering maya fluids?

You are probably using old version of Phoenix. Try the last one. The demo is also sufficient.

I have download the latest demo and installed. I am still using vray 2.2 and I still don't see anything in the output window that says im using pheonix shaders. It renders the same speed with pheonix fd plugins loaded and unloaded which makes me think its not using the shaders. pretty please I need to get this working asap

So, you have the file "vray_phoenix.dll" in the folder "vrayplugins" and you can't see something like

[2012/Nov/16|11:43:56] V-Ray: [PhoenixCachePlugin] Frame data successfully loaded from .
                [2012/Nov/16|11:43:56] V-Ray: [PhoenixSimPlugin] grid 50x50x50, time 0.

                , correct?

yes I have the plugin in my vrayplugins folder. The only things my output window says about pheonix is when I open maya or load the plugin.

Phoenix FD for Maya 2012, version 2.0.0 Beta from Nov 5 2012, 13:00:59, revision

                  OK.

                    Can you provide a scene?

Did you tried on a simple scene? Like this one

                      simple2.zip

Exactly the same builds here and no problem.

Okay I reinstalled PhoenixFD demo. I can sim with Phoenix but It renders black/ no alpha with Vray, mental ray and maya software. Thats probably why maya fluids don't work. Is there something I am missing here? is there something I have to do to render after installing the pheonix demo?

                        I get this error

// Error: ERROR: Could not create plugin PhoenixFDSimGeom ! //
// Warning: Scene is empty. //

also, for I can't post in the pheonixfd forum :P

VRay can't find or load for some reason the vray_phoenix.dll plugin. The exact path of the plugins is written when you start rendering:

                          V-Ray: Loading plugins from "C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Maya2012/vray/vrayplugins/vray_*.dll"

You must copy the vray_phoenix.dll to each machine
