I actually edited the SP1 part in my post because we later discovered that the crash was still there, it just needed some extra steps to be triggered.

same issue here - after first crash worked normally - but the 3 render crashed maya again
roll back to 2013 maya too

Hi all,
I have finally found the source of this trouble and it is in the Qt libs Autodesk uses. However I can modify our code a little bit to avoid this behaviour.
I just need to verify this solves the crashes not only on windows and that it does not break older versions -- then I will push the change. This would be the nightly after tonight's.
