Take that up with CG... (I think Nikki is actually the one who put spot3d together)

Re: Rough surfaces - a mini tutorial

      Hi Guys,

Funnily enough, I have been experimenting with this affect over the last few days. I have been trying to simulate rough matt black foam. I must admit that most of the time I arrive at a conclusion by testing rather than theory. In this case I eventually found that the double diffuse layer worked. I used a noise pattern on the first diffuse layer colour. (Multiplier 5, B&W perlin Noise, UV repeat 80.) In the same diffuse layer I set a transparency colour of 200,200,200. Because I was simulating black, the second diffuse layer was Black - 0,0,0. It works very well for me and is quick to render. Obviously you have to set your environment so its not too light but otherwise everything is the same.

      Hope this helps.

      Gavin

That I have seen here too, noise helps to get a rough look feeling. For closeups a good texture is important.

          Router,

Could you point me in the direction of the bump map you used for that texture?

          Thanks,

          Brian
