I was looking to use dirt as an opacity map for a layered material but I can't seem to get the black to be black, it looks more like 50% gray. Anyone know why this is?

I am trying to achieve an effect like this worn metal. I have tried curvature map as well but it doesn't give me the worn edge effect like this. Dirt seems the way to go but it wont let the pure base material through.

You can strengthen a Curvature or Dirt map by slotting it in a Simple Mix texture and using a value higher than 1 for Multiply Result and then using the result as a blend map in Blend Material.

        AMAZING!!! Thank you!

In this case I just used it as an opacity map of 2 BRDFs stacked on each other.

Would you mind attaching the material file so I can see this technique?

Only if you tell me if you are the real Frank Gehry.

Thanks for attaching the vrmat file! Unfortunately, I'm not the real Frank Gehry...I wish haha.

I'm having an issue loading your vrmat file into V-Ray, and I'm not really sure what's causing it. I don't think it has anything to do with your file. If possible, could you attach screenshots of the material settings?

I appreciate you going through this trouble for me!

2 stacked BRDF metals - the bottom is the gray color and the top is the shiny silver metal
The Opacity on the top layer is set to Simple Mix with the multiply set to 5
In the color / Texture map is a Dirt tex
The Occluded color on the Dirt settings is a Cellular procedural to give some varying worn texture.

Thank you, I got it to work this time!
