I was looking to use dirt as an opacity map for a layered material but I can't seem to get the black to be black, it looks more like 50% gray. Anyone know why this is?

You can strengthen a Curvature or Dirt map by slotting it in a Simple Mix texture and using a value higher than 1 for Multiply Result and then using the result as a blend map in Blend Material.

I'm having an issue loading your vrmat file into V-Ray, and I'm not really sure what's causing it. I don't think it has anything to do with your file. If possible, could you attach screenshots of the material settings?
I appreciate you going through this trouble for me!

2 stacked BRDF metals - the bottom is the gray color and the top is the shiny silver metal
The Opacity on the top layer is set to Simple Mix with the multiply set to 5
In the color / Texture map is a Dirt tex
The Occluded color on the Dirt settings is a Cellular procedural to give some varying worn texture.
