  • Depth of Field

So I've been searching around for more information on depth of field. I've seen the manual and have played with the test scene. I am able to achieve DOF with the default camera on easily. The aperture setting adjusts the blurriness effectively.

When I select the physical camera, the aperture setting becomes "un-selectable". The aperture field becomes grayed out. If this is the setting that adjusts the blurriness, does the DOF not work with the physical camera on?

    I've seen this post:

    http://asgvis.com/index.php?option=c...sg9672#msg9672

Here, the physical camera is on, and the DOF aperture is still adjustable. Is this a function of SketchUp vs. Rhino or Max? Is this not available on SketchUp just yet?

    Any information would be helpful.

    Regards,

    Justin

Oh, and I am running V-RAY version 01.05.30 with SketchUp 7.1.6087.

    Thanks!

So I think I've answered my own question. I've been lowering and raising my F-number......lower creates more blurriness, higher creates less. It's just not the same as what is displayed in the manual.

              Re: Depth of Field

I prefer doing the DoF with the VFB Channel`s Z-Depth, and then doing it in the Photoshop, it`s better to control there than at the V-Ray`s Camera DoF attribute.

... not to mention the VFB Z-Depth/PS Lens blur method takes about 1/20th of the time compared to waiting for V-Ray to render DoF.

is it as realistic? Where I can I find a tutorial on this method?

While changing the F-Number does affect the blurriness somewhat, it drastically changes the brightness of the render. I've tried adjusting the ISO Value and Shutter Speed to compensate, but with little success.

What did you do compensate for the change in brightness after you've changed the F-Number?
                    I am currently using V-Ray 1.49.01.

ISO and Shutter speed. How much did you change the F-Stop by, and how much did you adjust ISO or Shutter Speed to compensate?

                        Aces High,

There's an excellent Z-Depth/Photoshop DoF tutorial at the following link:

                        http://www.onnovanbraam.com/index.ph...epth_of_field/

Just ignore all the 3DSMax stuff at the start and jump straight to the bit where you see the grayscale Z-Depth image. The guy ywho made the tut uses a slightly different method to create teh depth map; he creates a self-illuminating material, but for most purposes you can just use the standard V-Ray Z-Depth channel image instead.

The method isn't perfect, it often needs some manual blurring (which is described in the above tut), but the whole process usually takes a fraction of the time compared with rendering out "true" DoF in V-Ray.

Yea, the Z-depth is new to me. I've played with it a bit and have had great success. I will no longer be playing with the depth of field within V-ray. Thanks for the heads up!

                            Cheers,
