  • Not releasing memory in RTX mode

    Hi,
Is there any update regarding this problem? Vray GPU RTX became practically unusable for animations since this problem occurred in V-Ray 6 update 2.1 and it still hasn't been resolved in V-Ray 7.
Switching to CUDA is of course possible but the speed advantage of RTX over CUDA is huge on RTX4090 cards and a big deal in productions.

    Thanks,
    Lars

That explains why I am crashing on animations that I was able to render before - out of memory 2/3 of the way in.

Confirming same appears to be happening on still renderings, with Rhino 8.14, Vray 6.20.06, Nvidia 566.14, Windows 11 Pro.
Also, If I stay inside Rhino & close/open files, it seems to be worse.
Only way to clear it is to exit Rhino, then restart Rhino.
and I'm using system memory for textures option.

Indeed it's also still renderings. Render a few stills or firing up IPR a couple of times and 3dsmax has to be restarted to release the GPU memory.

Usually, V-Ray GPU does cache some information so as not to load it several times, hence increasing performance, however what lars_snelders is talking about sounds like a memory leak. Please, send the scene in question via the contact form so we can troubleshoot.

EDIT: A similar issue was reported a while ago, but it should be fixed. It won't hurt to install the latest V-Ray 6 stable build and see if the issue persists. Also, ensure you're using the recommended NVidia Drivers since using newer ones may cause issues.

            Thanks for your reply,
Looks indeed like a memory leak. It's not happening with one particular scene but with every scene when using RTX mode, but I will collect and send the latest file I'm working on over the weekend.
            I'm using 3dsmax 2024, latest V-Ray 7, WIN10, Nvidia Studio Driver 566.14

                  Hi Muhammed_Hamed,

                  Thanks for looking into this.
Yes I send a Dropbox link yesterday and uploaded the archived scene this morning via the secure file upload.

I just noticed that toggling "Sys Mem for Textures" in between renders frees up VRAM.

Update, this issue seems to be related to the newer drivers. Driver 552 and 551 don't have the memory leak
We are working with Nvidia now on a fix, hopefully in a new driver
FYI, don't use driver 560.xx or 555.xx because of other issues

                            Thanks for the update Muhammed_Hamed.
Would you recommend switching to 552 or 551 for the time being? The oldest I can find on Nvidia's website is the Game Ready driver 552.44

552.44 should work fine, that being said it doesn't include the recent security patch. We cannot change the recommended driver of V-Ray GPU
We will try our best to solve this with Nvidia as soon as possible
