16bit 3D Displacement looks like 8bit

Hi,

when using 16 bit displacement images to avoid the normal 8bit artefacts, using 2d displacement (landscape) works as expected. Using the same map with 3d displacement looks awfull, full of jagged stairs as a 8 bit map would create.
I prefer 2d disp. so it normally doesn’t bother me, but for my actual project 3d is a lot faster, so I would like to use it.

When will this problem be fixed ???

Can you show an image of this effect? Also, do you have the “Filter texmap” option ON in the displacement modifier?

So I found a solution for the upper problem, simply turn the texture blur from 1.0 to 0.1 and the ringing disappear.
I use the latest VRay-build.

The pictures are of a Z-Brush character brought as .obj to 3dsmax at a VERY early stage of development.

So for another strange phenomenon:
sometimes 3D displacement looks smoother as 2D:

as you can see, the faceted look would be the right one, because zhe disp-map reflects the low end-resolution in z-brush.

Vlado could you bring light into this problems?
Althouht there are workarounds for both problems, they perhaps help the VRay Team to solve some bugs.

Have You tried using the VRayBmpFilter map before adding to the VrayDisplacement ?

Yep, as Candelero says, it would be best to use the VRayBmpFilter texture when applying displacement maps from zbrush, instead of a Bitmap texture.
