Head Study: Skin Shading exercise

I sculpted the head in Zbrush exported a 75k triangle mesh with a normal map for detail. I used a Vray standard material with diffuse, reflect, reflect and translucency maps. I’m planing on doing a tutorial video showing the skin shader setup. I’d love to get some input on what you all think of the image.

Here is a render using the fast sss shader

Very nice looking skin. I like the first image a lot, the second one is nice but looks a bit too clean, I like that the first one appears to have shiny areas on the skin as if the face were a bit greasy or slightly sweating.

rmejia - Thanks, I like the standard material better too. It also rendered faster than the fast sss go figure.

An update on the Vray Standard material

Here are some of my tests with the VRayFastSSS2 material (model and textures are not mine, obviously :-)).

Best regards,
Vlado

@vlado: looking great ! The head/face looks a tad waxy tho that might be because of missing hair etc. Care to share some settings and eventually low res screengrabs of the type of maps you used ? Got some skin work ahead and could use any input available

Regards,
Thorsten

Here’s an early test of what I got up to with the head from Napoleon: Total War.

It’s not got enough SSS on it at this stage. I’d like to revisit it at some point.

Vlado,

Could you share your settings with us?

i like the avatar render vlado did hehehe

nice render shoey! He looks a little too reflective to me, and his chin looks like its made of concrete, its lacking a little ‘softness’. Fantastic render though.

Vlado,

Could you please upload your shader setup and maybe even the scene with stand in geometry?

I’ve been trying to get good skin from the VrayFastsss2 for a long time and haven’t come close to what you’ve got there.

I would really appreciate the chance to look at how you have achieved that effect.

Shoey - that is a great render

Here’s my latest attempt at skin.
Turntable

I’m working on my WIP head study and will share my skin results when I’m done with everything (couple days)

Update on my skin shader study. Would love to hear what you guys think of the shader, I know the texture and model need work.

Another update on the skin shader

Shoey, mind posting the shader setup for that model (and small previews of the maps)? I’ve got some problems with the SSS on mine. Here’s the renders and the shader setup.

My latest efforts on the skin shader front

MoonDoggie - I found the scale settings to be a key factor in getting a good result.

forgot to mention this is using the fast sss2 shader.

WDC, keep going. It’s not there yet, but it’s getting close. Looks much better.

Thanks for the tip, is it tied to the scale of the model? I’ve been tweaking the scatter radius to get a good result. Here’s where I’m at now.

Another update

MoonDoggie - Yes the the scale setting along with the scatter radius combined with the actual scale of the model create the final look. I don’t have a good understanding of the scale parameter but I think seems to control the back scatter or have an affect on it.
