How to create ground fog that looks like fog?

Hi,

I’ve tried the Environmental Fog option as shown here, but my fog looks like a transparent gray box with soft edges. I’m trying to create fog about 12 to 15 inches in height from the ground that looks like this.

Is this possible with the V-Ray Environmental Fog option? Is there a specific texture I need to apply? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,

Hello @hyunjin_bae ,

In my opinion, @suzanne_doherty 's proposed solution would look best. However, if you don’t have a way to create a smoke simulation and import it into Cinema, an alternative approach would be to use Environment Fog in Cinema with a simple noise shader inside Fog Transparency. Here’s a basic example of what I mean:

The effect in the picture was achieved using the following steps:

  1. Create a V-Ray Environment Fog.
  2. Create a Cube and scale it to the required dimensions.
  3. Make the Cube a child of the Environment Fog.
  4. Inside the Environment Fog options, find Fog Transparency and add a Noise Shader.
  5. Set the Noise Space to World.
  6. Adjust Noise Type, Scale, Low Clip, High Clip, Brightness, and Contrast until you get the desired result.
  7. If you see the edges of your cube in the fog, you can adjust the Fade Out Radius inside the Environment Fog’s Fade Out tab to soften the edges.

Please note, this is just a simple example that you can build upon. You could achieve an even better setup for your use case by using Layers to overlay the noise with a Falloff, for example, to control the fog’s visibility. You could also try using two Environment Fogs with different noise textures—the possibilities are endless.

I hope this helps, and if you have any additional questions, feel free to ask here.

I’ve also recorded a video of the steps above, to be used as reference:

Use a bunch of VBD fog / smoke assets and layer them up in the scene. I bought a few smoke / fog packs and loaded them in using Vray volume grid. Ive attached a frame from an animation I did using this method.
