The lighting is nice and I like the image ratio. But the metall material looks so undefined. Is it gold?
I like to use two reflection layers for metals - one with sharp reflection and behind a blury layer. The first reflection layer must be less strong. An example is the material here:

Cheers Micha - I’ll try that and update with the results!

Updated: 04/07/06 - MP3 player - My first attempt at using the the ‘emissive layer’ (used on screen, button arrows and ear plug blue ring). Also experimenting with ‘lacquered wood’ effect , and soft ‘spark’ to aluminium materials. Render time 14 mins

Many thanks Micha - very nice addition! Could you tell me how you did that? (I’m assuming that it was in Photoshop?) - My PS skills aren’t what they should be!! ![]()

I do this correction very often, because it change the mood of the whole image and bring together all objects in the image.
- use Ctrl-M (gamma correction ?) and go to the red chanal - move the middle of the curve so that you get additional red → go to the blue chanal and move the curve so that you get less blue.
Also I like the free tool ptlens. Here you can correct or add the vignetting effect.

If the image is a little bit to grey after the vignetting post work, than you could correct the histogram per Ctr-L.

Do you have a pic of the real thing? If not, try taking one of similar stuff. There are a few things to note. First is that when you would take a pic of this thing under that lighting conditions, you wouldn’t see much of the blue light. Look at the screen of a cellphone during the day or in a dark room, major difference. You will have to make the blue light very strong for it to cast much light on your surrounding objects. Then second problem, the white material is very reflective. try holding a blue light next to a mirror, it will reflect the light but the mirror surface itsself will not be blue colored. If you really want it to glow, you have to do it in photoshop. This is a volumetric effect and vray cannot render that out. Then as a last note, light up a dark blue plastic, and it will become very light blue or even white depending on the exposure time. Same is true in vray, you cannot have a dark colored object look like it’s giving of light.

Yes, the environment is to bright. I think, the most pixels around the object are at the limit of 255. I think, you can not add more light. But you could dim the environment.
An idea: if you place a blue invisible arealight above the middle, so you could add blue light around the blue object. The invisible arealight is invisible in reflection (the first time this effect is good for something, most I miss the reflection of the invisible arealight).

you can do it really easily in Post Prod with GLOW pen in Corel Painter IX. (try the free demo)
works best if environment slightly darker…
little test

nice hdr reflections for the Air Mick.
what is your map ? wanna share ? ![]()
I like the bump on the side of the BBQ.
alittle too much high but funny detail that “rocks and kill’them all”.

what do you mean by tweak ? HDR Shop brightness blur…
you had place this hdr map only in environemental with mirror ball mapping ? and rotated it to produce a nice effect ?
Magnatizerr Gallery
yep, did some brightness, blur etc in HDR Shop, then spent some time experimenting with V4R settings (angle, rotation etc) - hope that helps - yes it needs ‘Mirror ball’

Taking a leaf out of Micha’s book - I thought I’d updated the images to allow for easier viewing
