I was actually just standing around looking at the daily paper when i saw these lady bug charm bracelets for a local JC Penny ad. They looked like a fun project for vray.

This one could have been less noisy but i didnt want a huge render time

Okay, this is my 3rd day with V-Ray off and on between real world duties and just getting to play around, still doing tutorials and fiddling like crazy with parameters left and right. This was a test that I thought looked okay, I havent seen much jewelry done with V-Ray for Rhino yet. Comments and help are more than welcome. So far, i really like this engine, I just need a lot more practice.

the reflections are coming from a really colorful hdr map that is mostly black with a stained glass window far in the back ground. I would really love to see env’s on a per object level. It took many white cards, funny ground plane rotation angles and lots of area lights to keep the colors out of the ring bezels.

I also had to drop the reflection amount down to about .75 on the glass material to give it more of a glossy reflection. IOR is slightly higher than a typical diamonds IOR, when set to exactly 2.417 the inner facetting was refracting too much black from the environment. I think i ended up somewhere in the 2.5 range (id have to look at the file at home).

yeah its floating like .1 mm… it happend moving the ground plane ring around towards the stained glass… i noticed it too about 45 minutes into the render… lol i cant win.

Here was the initial diamond tweaking process starting from Micha’s material editor tutorial scene setup. Thanks again for the work on that, it saved me a lot of frustration by being able to see your sample materials and how they were configured. I will say I am still confused on some of the settings such as the difference between mapping reflection bmp’s and filter bmp’s and so on.

My diamond material still needs lots of work. I just dont get the sense of volume from it like i think it should have.

Your backround/ground is looking splotchy, I recommend to use a preblured version of your HDRI for the GI environment. Your HDRI is not easy to calculate for the GI engine. My starterkit based on this preblured HDRI method. :wink:

actually the GI hdr is blurred to a factor of 20 i think. the splotchyness is coming from a blue spot light that’s shooting on that wall from under the ground planes end like " ________ | " with the spot shooting up through the gap onto the back ground wall. I wanted to drive the samples and subdivisions higher but the render time would have been insane with the number of light sources. my main focus was really on the diamonds. but i totally agree and saw it as well.

Are you shure the spot light is the reason? The splotches are looking colored like the colors of the HDRI. A HDRI with bright colored spots is a problem most.

I have done a quick test - HDRI with filter blur of Vray and a preblured HDRI per HDRShop → the preblured HDRI produce much smoother LC GI.

Thanks (that was quick lol). To me what is odd is the ability to say Reflection Map - select an HDRI and set it to Environment. Now, in most other nice render engines this would tell me the user that this map will be basis of all reflections as though this object was in this environment. But when i set it up like that, i get some really random result. More like the Map is a filter of some sort blanketing the object.

The reflection map in V-Ray is used to determine the “crispness” of the reflection. Not so much an image of what is reflected. The filter map would be used for the latter. Also you want a reflection/refraction background you need to set it to the “Background” map in our Environment tab - I’m not sure if thats why your not getting the results you expect?

this is what I am after, i have tried using the Filter map to do this but it doesnt quite work like it should. There is no sense of depth to the environment, just a map wrapped and reflected on the object.

This photo is 2 seperate renders composited into 1 render. Each had a different background map. I would like to control these reflection maps on a per object basis. It’s the only way we are going to get great looking gemstones.

Right - ok I’m not explaining the “filter” properly. You are right - it is not going to give you any depth. The filter is not an environment map. It is a way to “filter” the color of the light reflected from the object. So instead of reflecting the light color it reflects the light color multiplied by the filter color. Or as you say “just a map wrapped and reflected on the object”. At this time I suppose the compositing is the only true way to accomplish what your doing. The reflection/refraction environment is only accesible on a global scale. I’ll look into per-object environments. I’m sure its possible- its just, unfortunately, not available at this moment from the plugins we ship with VfR.

I really hope that per-object environments are in our near future, beacause I feel that would broaden the capabilities of this engine. Don’t get me wrong, I really am impressed, however I think that this would be a very powerful utility. Also, I believe it may be a little misleading to have it say “Environment” if it is not actually an environment map. It seems that all of the mapping option screens are the same, where some may need to be a little different from others. I know that VfR is still in the beginning stages, and, as I’ve said before, I think it is absolutely superior to any other render engine for Rhino.

brutal, thats what i had figured but just wanted to make good and sure. Unfrotunately, our user base is not going to want to composite anything. I fear that the only way to achieve what we need to achieve with minimal work from the user is to have premade materials for gemstones that just “work” in almost any environment. The only way we can ensure that this happens is by having environment reflections/refractions on a per object level. While the more advanced users will “get it” and understand the process, the novice users will not. Thanks Joe and please keep me posted on the progress of this limitation.
