MEP Pipe Segment Material Ignored by Enscape

I have noticed that pipe segments that have a material assigned to them are ignored by Enscape.

Assigning materials to pipework in Revit is a pain as we have multiple types of pipes (copper, steel, plastic etc) Object Styles gives us control over all pipes which is not ideal, we can’t use filters (as far as I know). The pipe segments settings allows you to assign a material to it when it’s created not retrospectively. But if that material is being ignored by enscape it really leaves us with few options to apply materials to each pipe type.

Unless someone has a workaround?

Hi @mark.silcock I presume that the material of the pipe is “Graphics” tab only.

We currently use the “Appearance” tab for rendering, but we will support the usage of the “Graphics” tab in the future.

Maybe this can help you in the meantime: https://enscape3d.com/enscape-update-beautiful-physical-model-simulation-in-enscape/

Not sure I know what you mean between “Graphics” and “Appearance” tabs? Go easy engineers dont delve into materials very often

The material is part of the pipe segment type.

I have read that Blog but not sure how we could apply that method to different pipe types. I guess select the different pipe types and apply different phases to them?

No that wouldnt work, I think you can only have one phase active at a time? Not really used phases before.

One workaround is to apply a material at pipe system level, downside to that is it gives everything connected to that system that material regardless of category, it also overrides any object style overrides.

if only we could control the materials at filter level :frowning:

@mark.silcock we will check this.

Thats a Revit issue not an Enscape issue.

We will check the whole topic “Pipe material in Revit” and its effects on our rendering. If the Revit renderer catches the defined copper material, we should be able to catch it as well.

Great Stuff

@mark.silcock You used the “Nvidia mental ray” Engine for rendering in Revit. It seems that this engine uses the “Graphic” tab of the used Revit material.

Please check the rendering result using the Revit default renderer which should use the “Appearance” tab.

You can check as well, which display option you’ve chosen in your Revit view.

Realistic and Ray Trace use the “Appearance” tab, the others use the “Graphics” Tab for the view in Revit.

So your materials should contain identical information in the “Graphic” and “Appearance” tab. You can change the settings of your used material in Revit and your pipes will be displayed correctly.

Three (edit four) options attached. Seems Revit doesn’t like the most recent nvidia driver (384.94) when using the NVIDIA mental ray settings in 2016.

Noticed there is no renderer option in 2018?

To me from the results they are all using the appearance tab not the graphics tab?

Tried the cloud render as well which also seems to be using the appearance settings.

Ah interesting Revit 2018 & Enscape renders with the material.

Seems there is a difference between the 2016 UK Pipe template and the 2018 UK Pipe template.

Test workflow.

New project in 2016 with the 2016 template, draw pipes in copper, view in 3D and in enscape = no copper material displayed

New project in 2018 with the 2016 template, draw pipes in copper, view in 3D and in enscape = no copper material displayed

New project in 2018 with the 2018 template, draw pipes in copper, view in 3D and in enscape = copper material displayed
