Serious Performance Issues - Nvidia Drivers 511.09

No, each GPU uses its own memory pool and keeps its own copy of the scene.

I have tried the newest SD drivers 512.15 with the hope that it might bring back the 472.84 performance. I have tested the drivers on my both PCs one with the 3090 and one with the A6000.

Same performance loss in Vantage…

And given the fact that Nvidia’s next-gen Hopper GPU was revealed, Nvidia tend to slowly decrease older generation performance in order to “force” people to upgrade, especially the companies that are specialized in 3d rendering, game development, graphics etc.

Hi @vasile_bulgac1

The performance loss happens on a GPU connected to your monitors, the card downclocks itself to 700 MHz or so. You can monitor the frequency with GPU-Z
If you restart your machine you should get back to normal(until you trigger the behavior again), in most cases the bug happens after a long while of using the machine(but it seems that you can reliably reproduce somehow)
We have been working with Nvidia on this for a while now, sadly this behavior seems to be triggered by multiple things.
Do you usually keep your machine on for a long time? you could check right after restarting the machine if the performance is normal.
Do you change any of the settings in Nvidia’s control panel?
Is it possible to take a look at your setup please, we can setup a teamviewer session? it seems that some utility apps could trigger the issue. It will be helpful for us to check your setup, as you can reliably reproduce the bug

Best,
Muhammed

Hi Muhammed,

I will try to monitor the frequency with GPU-Z when it renders to see if it downclock itself.

About how long I keep my PC on, it’s about 5-6 hours per day. I will try to restart and then test the render speed.

I never change settings in NVCPL, and I always set Vantage to max pefr. (3090 and A6000).

My PC with the 3090 is connected to a LG UltraFine 32EP950-B (3840x2160) and my PC with A6000 is connected to a Eizo Cg319x (4096x2160) but I’m really worried if this might be the cause.

About teamviewer session I can’t install it, sorry but I can provide you DXDiag system file reports if that helps, but trust me on 472.84 drivers I had no issue at all.

I also heard many people complaining since 510 drivers release of performance drops in many apps, including games, that’s why I’m worried.

Tomorrow or the day after tomorrow I will run some tests with GPU-Z and I will post the results here.

P.S As a matter of fact I rolled back to 472.98 on my machine with the A6000 because I can’t afford that performance loss.

Best regards,
Vasile B.

Here’s my DXDiag report showing my PCs configuration

I have also checked the perf. after restart and no avail. The same

I will continue to investigate
DxDiag A6000.txt (112 KB)
DxDiag 3090.txt (124 KB)

Either you have something installed on both machines that triggers the issue on startup. Or you are hitting a separate case that we didn’t come across sadly, hence I asked about a team viewer session.
I have reproduced this issue multiple times on different machines, the behavior is always fixed after a restart. And in most cases I need to use the machine for +30 minutes to hit the bug
It is important for us to be able to reproduce your case in order to solve it.

Best,
Muhammed

Hi Muhammed,

OK, fine… I will install TeamViewer (free).

Write me a PM with all the details, because I never used TeamViewer only MSTSC

Best regards,
Vasile B.

Thank you!
Support will be in touch soon for the information. I will take a look at the performance degradation in Vantage with 512 and 511

Best,
Muhammed

Hello @vasile_bulgac1

I would like to ask you use our “Submit a request” form, in order for us to provide you with the remote control session instructions. They include a calendar, which you can use to book a slot at a time and date that are convenient for you.
In your message, you can simply add a link to this forum post and mention that it’s regarding a TeamViewer remote control session with me and Muhammed.

Thank you in advance!

I have used the submit a request from. It’s ID is #30799 and I want a positive declaration intended to give me confidence or a promise that during the TeamViewer session none of my driver settings or other workstation settings (including OC and other OS related settings) will not be tampered with, because my machines are very stable.

Thank you

Hi @vasile_bulgac1

I will do a clean installation of drivers, which resets the Nvidia control panel settings(you said your driver settings are defaults), you can install the new drivers prior to the remote session to avoid this step.
All what I will do is run GPU-Z standalone to monitor GPU frequency behavior and our V-Ray Benchmark tool/Vantage to see the degraded performance. This will not affect stability or OS in any way.

Best,
Muhammed

Hi,

I already have installed 512.15 Studio Drivers, therefore you do not need to install the drivers for me.

I have monitored the GPU with GPU-Z and it doesn’t downclock. But I repeat myself the issue start to manifest when rendering above 2160p (e.g 4320p).

And you can also see the temps of the VGA are more than safe (under 70).

Yeah, we need to take a look at your settings and monitor the GPU behavior. As said above, there is a chance this is a new case we haven’t reproduced yet
The issue is not an easy one, we have spent a lot of resources on this and notified Nvidia on the ways we were able to reproduce.

Our contacts at NVIDIA suggested trying this as a workaround: Go to NVIDIA Control panel → Manage 3D settings → Power management mode and set it to “Prefer maximum performance”. Please tell us if this makes a difference.

I’ll try that, let’s hope this workaround may work…

I have changed and tried many 8k renders with “Prefer maximum performance” in NVCPL…sadly no avail, I really can’t figure out what might be the cause but in games I have decreased perf. too for about 4-6% with these drivers.

If I roll back to 472.98 everything goes back to normal in Vantage and games too.

I think I might understood what might be the cause of slower rendering with the 511 drivers.

After the render stabilize the GPU utilization drops to 60-65%…

This issue does not manifest on 472.98

We have commented on this before. Do not rely on the task manager for GPU usage. It shows very wrong numbers. I’m even surprised it’s over 50%. Use GPU-Z, MSI Afterburner or something similar.

The performance issue that Muhammed reproduced is due to the GPU lowering its clock speed until reboot, not our software failing to utilize the GPU.

OK, the Windows Task Manager can be misleading…point taken.

After a fresh restart, I have opened GPU-Z for monitoring @ 1440p. The performance it is the same…
Also please don’t get me wrong but I never said that Vantage is to blame for this (failing to utilize the GPU), but this new generation of drivers launched by Nvidia, which started cripple performance with Ampere gen cards…

And again I’m repeating myself. Up to 2160p rendering performance is optimal. At higher resolutions (e.g 4320p) problem starts.

When I will render at 4320p I will open GPU-z and I will take different screenshots and I’ll post’em here.

And the legend about “Nvidia cripples older GPUs with their drivers” it is no longer a myth, at least in my opinion.

Best regards,
Vasile B.
