Understanding DMC Sampler

I understand that, but still 12h for a 700x900 image on a 12 thread i7 with still noise…
maybe that’s what it takes, but it seams so excessive, no?

Vlado, do you think you could have the same check on my scene ?

Thanks

Stan

Yeah that’s nuts alright. I’d bring down your AA to half - try 1 / 16, I’d up the samples on the light outside the room as that’s very very noisy and up the subdivs on the reflections on your wall and floor - maybe double them. I’d do an override material of a grey to make sure your lights are clean first though, as you can have noisy reflections, or materials reflecting noisy lighting.

John, how’s your video coming along that you mentioned once or twice on the subject?

3LP - I had a play with your scene and so far its the HDR that is very challenging for sampler to clean up. I think with such extreme lighting you might be better off with sun and sky node. At the moment I run at 400 samples and its still very noisy in diffuse pass so… lots of stuff to optimize.

Is it one of my hdri skies? Have you tried reducing the gamma to 0.75 to get more direct light in there?

Where can I get the scene?

Best regards,
Vlado

yeah it is, but no I haven’t put the gamma to .75, will try though

Thanks Vlado, I send you the scene through PM

PM me the scene and I’ll take a look.

Your Sample rate is all over the shop

Changing to .75 will make vrays importance sampling job on the HDR harder due to a larger tonal range…

sent you an email Vlado

Very hard hard scene to speed up 3LP but I’ll give it a proper crack tonight.

As a 3D artist in the print industry I haven’t encountered fully GI lit scenes as I don’t do Arch Vis but from a technical stand point I’ll give it a crack.

Thanks Grant for your interest!
Yeah it seems to be a tough one.
Interesting though

Cheers
Stan

Hi 3LP,

I’ve spend to much time appart from 3D and Vray, but now I’m back again to it. I would like to give a try on your scene because from the images you have posted I see no reason to wait more than 1hour for a final clean result.

Kind regards,
Gonçalo

Good luck with that haha

Hehe he didn’t sent me the scene! No need any luck after all.

Cheers

I was working on his scene for a while. As far as I can tell I dumped down his HDR method and moved to Sun and Sky. The IBL was too hard to interpolate to make in clean enough. With that change I got render times down by a bit but still lots to do.

Thanks, bye.

Yeah, same here, I reverted to a normal plane light and still it’s taking ages, I think it’s just because 99% of the light is comming from BF, and with glossy materials, it kills it.

Stan

Ohh… welcome back GoncaloP !!!

I havent started with materials yet. I was testing with gray shader just to fine tune noise settings for light pass and GI.

Once I got that cover I’ll wrap up materials. Naturally it looks totally different than your renders in max(my in maya) but my goal is to get it rendered fast with little noise. Then fine tuning color balance and shaders should be piece of cake. Will send you updates once I have some.

Thanks, bye.
