V-Ray for Rhino | 360° renderings

Hi dudes and dudettes,

is there any way in rendering a 360° ‘look-around’ image via V-Ray for Rhino? And would you recommend this method also for large exteriors with lots of facades, trees and materials?

Thanks in advance
Helldoor

Hi,
in the current beta, there’s a button that renders a stereo cubemap (2 x 6 images in one 1 x 12 strip) automatically. It can be viewed in an Oculus headset, Samsung Gear or Google Cardboard.
More info and examples here: https://labs.chaosgroup.com/index.php/portfolio/guide-to-virtual-reality-2/

Thanks. Wow, that certainly looks good! I’m so excited about these VR possibilities!
These however need special equipment to be viewed. I recently saw a 360° panorama, that could be viewed in a browser, and navigated with the mouse. Would that also be possible withing V-Ray for Rhino?

Yes, have a look at VRto.me

Thanks again, mgibeault. That’s exactly what I was looking for!

Btw, do You know when V-Ray 3.0 (final) is expected to offcially come out?

Not exactly but soon…

We upload a new build in the V-Ray 3.0 for Rhino Stable folder in the nightly build that allows you to create VR Spherical panoramic images.

Great, thanks! I wanted to take a look at the link, but sadly I “do not have permission to access this page”?

And one more question: how do the stereo cube maps or VR Spherical images affect the render times?

Standard resolution for a 2 x 6 cubemap is 1536 x 18432 so it can take a long time…

Sounds like a few days..

For that resolution it will take you couples hours in V-Ray 3.4 for Rhino. All depend of the scene. We have done exterior renders at that resolution in 2-4 hrs. You can always control the quality, image output and use SWARM.

Wow, such render times sound pretty awsome. I really can’t wait to buy the new finished version. My hope, that they’d include a texture scatterer still stays though.
Btw - does 3.4 have good backward compatibility? The project I’m working on is such an exterior and the customer would be delighted to have a 360° image of it. As I tried rendering the existing scene however (this was textured and set up in V-Ray 2.5) with the V-Ray 3.40 b2, it wouldn’t render at all. I couldn’t figure out why…

The render will not be 100% the same between V-Ray 2.0 fro Rhino and V-Ray 3.4 for Rhino, because we change couples thing in V3.4. For example we change the photometric scale to match the same in 3ds max, we are also using sRGB now and we remove the linear workflow option in the color mapping to handle the gamma in a different/correct way now. So, scene from V-Ray 2.0 may look darker. You will have to change the exposure to match V2. If you are using burn values in the color mapping, you will have to control that through the VFB. The Highlight Burn in the VFB will produce exactly the same effect as the burn value in the Color mapping. If you don’t want to upgrade your current V-Ray 2.0 scene into V-Ray 3.4 scene, I recommend you to finish your project in 2.0 and then move to V3.4 for new project. However, it worth the time to upgrade the v2 scene into v3.4 to take advantage of the V3.4 speed and all the new features and improvement that we have now.

Best

Can’t wait to switch to 3.4!
