VANTAGE GPU Crash

Been working on a Vantage project this week and everything was going fine…2 days later, I get a dump error message stating that Vantage can’t allocate memory due to lack of resources. Now file loads but either freezes and crashes or opens, it’s dark, freezes and crashes. Any idea? Working on a MSI laptop with a 3080 rtx card. Max 2023 and vray 6 and Vantage 1.8.1.

Hi Luma3d,

Has anything changed in the system like windows update, video driver, etc? Or have you added that much more assets that couldn’t fit in the GPU memory?

Best regards,
Alexander

The file %APPDATA%\Chaos Group\Vantage\debug_log.txt saved after a freeze and crash may also hold some info.

The dark scene and magenta material probably mean you’re out of GPU memory unless you’re using asset files from a network drive and they have failed to load.

drive 516.X was installed. What’s the recommended driver for 1.8.1?

A question for the experts…would an external egou resolve this bottleneck/problem?

Driver 516 should be ok, we haven’t noticed problems with it. (We haven’t updated the recommended driver in a while because we suspected a performance issue, but we will probably update that soon)

Do you mean an e-GPU with more memory? This would of course help if your scenes barely fit in memory.

It’s always helpful if you could send us a scene that we can test here.

Greetings,
Vladimir Nedev

Does Vantage allow for multiple use of gpus?

You can use two GPUs on a desktop machine. In fact this should happen automatically and by default. On a laptop you can only use either the internal or the external GPU, not both.

It works best if the two GPUs are identical or at least relatively close in performance (e.g. the same generation).

I would love to send you the file, but it always seems that my files are too large to send over.

Hi Luma3d,

You can upload your scene to wetransfer / gdrive / dropbox / mega, etc , use the help center (https://support.chaos.com/) and in the support ticket attach that link. The support guys will later reach out to us and we will take a look at it.

Best regards,
Alexander
