Having and issue with VRay GPU update 3 hotfix1 DR2 crash on load/engine switch
in a blank scene switching from arnold to vray gpu or from vray to vray gpu causes max to crash
No issues on my end. For starters, I suggest resetting your 3ds Max settings to their defaults.
A co-worker is experiencing the same issue and with Vantage. I will check with our IT dept I suspect there may be an issue where when launching our security protocols may be causing a problem.
Spoke with co-worker about vantage, it does load but when selecting the max window max crashes MAX27/vray 7 latest build
Additional tests, in all cases blank starting scene:
Win11 2SH2 Build 26200.8390
Nvidia studio driver 596.36
Dual 4090
3DSMAX 2024.2.13 /Vray GPU 6 update 2.1 (6.20.06 build 00000) - Loads NO errors
3DSMAX 2026.3.3 /VRay GPU 7 update 2 hotfix 3 (7.20.08 build 00001) - Loads NO errors
3DSMAX 2027.1 /VRay GPU 7 update 3 hotfix 1 DR2 (7.30.04 Build 00000) - Crash on load
These are also new default installs
Several other users have tested this as well as testing on home machines and have the same problem. There is nothing reported in event log in windows nor anything in anti-virus/anti-intrusion packages. Please advise. @hermit.crab
Could you post the exact reproduction steps?
Simply switching from Vray to VrayGPU with a blank scene or populated scene.
Still digging through event log etc looking for anything, just updated to nvidia studio driver 610.47, same issue

I’ll update my 3ds Max to update 1 to see if that has something to do with it.
EDIT: No issues. Just noticed you are saying you are using the latest gpu driver. Would you mind trying with the one we recommend (595.97)?
@hermit.crab I reverted to 595.97 after a clean reinstall and same issue persists

Thanks for the crash dump. It seems something goes wrong when V-Ray is trying to list AMD GPUs. Do you have such installed ?
No, Dual Nvidia RTX4090, not sure why it would be looking for amd gpu, there is a 7950 cpu
Also VrayGPU works in MAX26/Vray 6 and MAX25/Vray5
Yep working in V6/V5 is expected - no AMD GPU support there 
We’ll check a few other things too and get back.
In case your machine has an integrated AMD GPU: Windows update may have installed AMD drivers, namely version 26.5.1, which version is known to crash a lot of software. If that’s the case, you should install AMD drivers 26.3.1, which are the latest known to not crash the system.
I disabled the onboard gpu in windows 11 and it works now. Asked IT to disabled it in BiOS next time they are at our datacenter. Ty
