VRayDisplacement to extrude plane (and clip away dark areas)

Hi all

I saw a demo ChaosGroup did a few years back of a fork they rendered using JUST a plane object with metal applied and a VRayDisplacement MOD to actually “extrude” the fork from the plane and cut away areas of the plane to reveal a full 3D fork.

For the life of me I’m not getting the same results. Tried with 2d and 3d displacement, but on the sides of the plane (where it is now displaced) I cant get smooth edges and it keeps “teething” or pixelating on the edges. Tried switching each tick box on and off in the modifier, but still not getting a clean “model”

What am I missing here?

For smoother edges you have to use better setting for displacement.
In my example I have used 3D displacement with Edge Lenght 1 and Max subdivision 8.

Thanks I opened and rendered your file as is, but still at the bottom of the text you can see some “fading” to black and even the “teething” effect

Yes - you are right - I haven’t tested close up renders.
