When will Apple chip hardware ray tracing be supported
Unfortunately no specific date yet. With the latest release we have activated some of the ray tracing features for captures on mac though.
Perhaps stability and availability are the most important.
It has been almost a year since the last post. In March of 2025, Apple released the new Mac Studio with M4 Max and M3 Ultra / ray tracing capable chips. Is there any progress on the side of Chaos/Enscape team?
Thanks!
Hi @Diegotoh
since a couple of versions Enscape for mac supports almost all ray tracing features it has on Windows - added ray traced sun shadows and colored shadows to mac. Not via hardware ray tracing yet though. Hardware ray tracing would probably give a few percent performance increase, but not a better image quality which is on par with Windows version already except for ray traced artificial lights and DLSS which is Nvidia proprietary feature.
Hardware ray tracing on mac is still on our radar, but when it is going to happen depends on many things so it’s hard to give exact deadline.
Thanks for your prompt answer Alexander. I had no idea some ray tracing was supported already. I just activated it via general settings/image quality options.
The M3 chip was introduced fairly recently (half a year ago at the time of writing) with support for ray tracing in the hardware.
