Yacht Marketing Film

Hi folks,

Here is a link to an animation we have recently finished, output at full HD and currently being played on a 6m screen at the London boat show.

Produced with 3dsmax, VRay and Aftereffects.

Hope you like it.

Chris

Very nice Chris!
What did you use for the water?

I wouldn’t know where to begin. How long and how many people?

Very clear, informative animation. You must be happy with that. Water looks great.

Only thing I would say (and it isn’t intended to discredit the work) is that the rendering lacks…oomph? Difficult to describe, but its just lacking a strong, marketing punch - contrast/drama etc. Its the kind of thing we always seem to end up with. We always try to push things a bit more - aim for a more cinematic style - but at the end of the day, the client wants to see everything, so it all looks evenly lit and ‘safe’. Know what I mean?

Hi Chris - thanks. We used a max displace modifier for the large linear waves and VRay displacement (using a mix of smoke and noise) for the smaller ripples.

We had 2 people on it for 6 weeks with 1 extra helping on and off over that period.

Yeah I know where you are coming from - the more I look at it the more I think we could have gone to town more on the grading.

Beautiful and clean work as always, really nice. I was straining my eyeballs looking for a sign of flicker or noise but it’s spotless!

I agree with Tricky that the overall grading looks a little flat and desaturated for my taste but then again it’s absolutely spot on for the target market.

Great job!

Good Job I like it. Is the caustics real or fake?

Thanks AJ

Morne - Caustics are fake, we output a seperate pass in which we projected a black and white version of the water shader texture onto the hull and screened it on in Aftereffects.

Grate work Chris, I love yachts renders.
