    Box #2 = 9:15 (purely renderslave)

Re: Please stop posting renders with DR

It seems for now that Xeons are best choice for Vray. Is there someone with mighty Opterons in here to say opposite ?

      Deck + Ajosu
As I posted, my Dual Opteron 246 (2GHz):
      Dual Opteron 246, 2GB, WinXP64bit, Vray 1.46.14, Max7:

      6m25.5s

apexmotion said he got 5:25 with Dual 250

So I'd say (just like in the previous benchmarking thread with the EGZ mats on teapots) that that the Opterons perform fairly comperably to the Xeons.

        Xeons win for now...

IMHO Xeons win in this benchmark.
If you compare almost fastest Opteron available, Opteron 250 (2,4GHz, 700USD), it has similar results to dual Xeon 3,0GHz (280USD).

If you compare absolute maximum of each platform, Opterons end near 2,5GHz and Xeons near 3,8GHz (new Nocona or older types overclocked), it is clear that Opterons just cannot go any faster in this moment. Xeons on contrary have large overclocking potential (even older ones) and new models can soon reach 4GHz.

Well at about the same price the 3.6's are 16% faster than the 250's

My main reason for choosing the dual 250 Opterons is for the potential switch to 64 bit Windows. I don't think the 64 bit Xeons were out at the time. We do a bit of rendering in Mental Ray as well and they have optimized code for 64-bit.

All the noconas run 64bit too

                *updated*
here are my results (VRay 1.46.14):
                2xXeon 3,06 = 5:38min
                2xXeon 3,50 = 4:19min
                2xAMD XPmobile 2600 @ 2,24GHz = 6:54min
                1xAMD 64 3200 @ 2,4GHz = 10:17min (Win2k3 32bit)
                1xAMD 64 3200 @ 2,4GHz = 10:32min (Win2k3 64bit)
                1xP4 HT enabled 3,063 =10:58min
                4xPIII Xeon 900MHz (2MB Cache) = 8:20min (still a beast)
                8xPIII Xeon 900MHz (2MB Cache) = 4:48min
                2xAMD MP2000 = 10:19min
                2xAMD MP2400 = 7:56min
                2xAMD MP2600 = 7:42min

In my opinion, the xeon with HT is best choice for a workstation, the opteron is much too expensive and I don't understand the hype about 64bit (maybe some people are still thinking that 64bit will double the perfomance). Best "bang for the buck" is still the good old Athlon, running 2 XPmobiles (70$each) on a Tyan MP2460 (60$) with shitty DDR PC2100 , a rockstable solution for DR.

                  Great numbers Randy

Hey Randy, you've got some great numbers. I am very surprised with time you get with good old Tyan Tiger 2460 - where did you get those AMD Mobile 2600+ ? How did you clocked them in Tyan to these numbers ?
One of my old dual machines runs Tyan 2460 with 2x XP1800+, but those XP mobiles looks like a great upgrade

Numbers that you made with single AMD64 are bad .. I expected AMD64 at 2400MHz to go under 10 minutes for sure ... maybe it is due to server operating system ... or slow memory.

Please tell me something about that Tyan 2460 and AMD mobile trick

                    Hi Deck,
thanks for the nice benchmark. I bought the XPM's from Microtronica in germany, I have a trade license for hardware and can buy direct from the four big distributors in germany (saves me ~20%). But you should be able to get them in a good comp-store for ~90 euros. The Bios (1.05) will recognize them as MP but at much lower speed, but thats not important because in windows you'll have full speed and features. The XPm2600 is clocked @2.0GHz, this is what you'll get after booting windows (CPUID). For higher clockspeeds you'll need to apply the wire mod to the socket, not a big thing, but watch out for a good cooling for the chipset. This configuration is running rockstable, I've rendered few animations over 2 weeks (nonstop) with 4 rigs like them, never had a crash. Now I'll upgrade my remaining 6 MP2460 too.
I was expecting more from the Athlon 64, the Ram is fine, Kingston DDR400 and the server OS eats only few seconds. I think it's time for AMD to update their performance-rating downward, the PR was necessary to compare the AMD XP with a P4, but now I think that it's not true anymore.
I'll update my rendertimes in few minutes, than you can compare them with a dual MP2000, a Dual MP2400 and a Dual MP2600.

                      PROBLEMS !!!

                      I don't understand it.. I run a DUAL XEON 2.8 HT ON 2GB RAM WIN XP SP1.

                      18MINUTES ?????????

I always thought my pc was running slow... but now I CAN definitely see it.. Can somebody point me to which direction I should look ?

                      Thx
                      Nicolaas

rendered in 1.46.09 Maybe it's the version... 'll try it out..

well as you can see theres something wrong with your scene. Its much brighter then the others, which could very well be a symptom of your problem.

as you can see, Motion Blur doesn't work in DR with 1.46.13 !!

                                My system specs....

well I just ran these specs...From what I see there pretty good.

1600x1200 @ Max set Priority low with 2 GB Page File

1600x1200 @ Max Priority low with 4 KB Page File

1600x1200 @ Max Priority High with 4 KB Page File

I'm kind of lost each time I restarted my computer to make sure I had nothing still in Memory. But I think this shows Page filing & Priority settings don't make a world of diffrence. I can't think of anything else to tweak to m ake my system run any faster..."well without overclocking it"
