  • white ripple advice!

I've been asked to add the enclosed artwork to an image but have had difficulty re-producing it, despite using a combination of displacement, and bump-mapping. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    many thanks in advance....

not a simple task, I would suggest tessalating the mesh several times, then applying in max a noise modifier to get the general shape. Then use vraydispalcement to add more details with probably a noise texture. I would also model the base mesh to have major surface deformations as a model.

      Have it laser scanned.

        thanks

....at the risk of sounding passe i have to say that this forum is simply the best most informative, and helpful Ive ever come across. The people here are pure talent, and the advise second to none. Thanks for the advice I will try these methods. (not enough money for a laser scanner though!
I may also look at a terrain modelling solution too - anyone know of a script/plugin for max?

Chaos Group should definately have an annual meet - It could become something very special in my opinion......

I didn't mean to suggest you buy one. Contact the largest land surveyor in your area and ask them if they have a Cyrax unit, or know someone who does. Many dealers also contract out their services.

If you can do it the way Dmitry suggests, and it will look close enough to what you are looking for, then definitely do it his way.

Another idea just occurred to me. If you have access to the "art", put some targets on it and take a bunch of photos. Then use one of the photogrammetry programs to rough in the basic mass. Tesselate, displace, etc. from there.

This seems kind of sticky. This is "art" not random bump generation right? I mean you wouldn't look to a paint program to generate a random generation of splatters to replicate a Jackson Pollock right? But then really the amount of detail in this is really great. Its not a small matter of replicating an image this would be mimicking artisitic intent. Maybe thats not what you are being asked but you might want to be clear especially if the artist sees this.

Personally I'd treat it as a modelling and then displacement job - I'd model the top and bottom edge by matching a plane to the rough perspective of the object and then draggin its vertices into their position on screen. Then use a connect to make a line of edges down the centre and trace that other large line. Maybe add a meshsmooth to make your mesh more dense and use a smoke or noise map in a regular max displace modifier to add in all of the smaller bumps.

Does it have to be exact (or at least approaching it) in its form/displacement?
i would go down the route of 4 Planes -converted to nurbs-
Create your 4 disp. maps by initially creating 1 large map. Split into 4 (along its width), that way your transition from one plane to the next will follow that map, load each map for its respective plane.
                keep us posted,
                Cheers,
                Tom

yeah i would model the most part of it and use displacement for the smaller bumps. using probabaly noise like morbid said.

I would have alook at supernoise, its a blur studios plugin. And has a lot more control over the normal noise.. just what you need to help break it up abit and get more randomness

super noise is cool, but you have to be careful with it; it can be very slow on renderings.

I would model the panels as flat surfaces, subdivide them, and then use paint deformation under poly options. It's more intuitive than displacement and take guessing out of the equation. Another option, more fun, would be using zbrush....but i understand that paint deformation would be a more efficient way to accomplish this particular task.

Ryan_Chiong - thats looks great (also the panel do go up and down too)
                            Which technique did you use?

panthon - this is a great idea - im trying it now - very cool. Its amazing how after so many years using max I can still discover new functions...!

.....thanks so much for all the help - will keep updated.

below is the image in an early form! (as you can see the artwork extends up also)

Max is full of little tricks that can be easily missed from version to version, specially with this one version-a-year schedule which is happening lately
