  • Shadow Noise

What is the best way to get rid of noise in the shadows? This file was a bear... I had lots of problems with MAX 9. Most of the problem was layers. I had a deck in the back that wouldn't take on any materials. I ended up rebuilding the deck thinking it would solve the issue, but it didn't go away. I quickly realized the only thing the same would be the layer so I copied everything to a new layer and everything was fine Same issue with the grass. I thought I would post that info just incase someone else experiences the same problem.

The image is too small to see the noise in the shadows. You need to post screenshots of your settings.

Oh wow, that IS noisy. I dont do alot of images with QMC for first bounce and LC for second. Try upping your qmc samples maybe? Also how does it look if you go with irrad map for first bounce and use adaptive subdivision for your AA. You can get away with lower quality QMC settings that way.

using a non sharp AA filter, like area or quadratic, might help you.

nice render. looks kind of like late afternoon. what time is the sun set to?
on the bright side, the noise kind of looks like film grain on an enlarged photograph .

thanks for info on layer issue. wierd how these strange issues sometimes come up
like the old: max file crashes> merge everything into new scene and hope for the best scenario.
but it's pretty amazing what software can do these days. still remember the first 3d i saw on an appleII that was coded in mathematics or something. come a long way since then.

                  Noise

I think I got the noise issue fixed with the help provided thus far. I'll post an update later today. I forget the time of day. I started with MAX's daylight and 9:00am, but I know I changes the sun, but I am nut sure if I used MAX's daylight or just fudged it.

                        Trees

I was hoping someone would ask... NatFX! Love it and highly recommend it! Costly, but well worth it. I'll have to tweak the tiling on the trunk. It is a custom map.
