    • I am quite impressed. Do you remember how long it took for the driver to compile the GPU program (how long did it take the first time you run the RT engine to startup) ?

      • Another question: Did you install the separate AMD APP SDK or just the catalyst drivers?

          • I bought a couple of 290x's and had to send them back the drivers were so bad. Not to mention loud. Who knows maybe i had a bad batch.

Uhhh... It did not seem to be very long. Let me see.... 5 seconds between pressing the button and a blurry image appearing.

I would be happy to run further tests in vray 3 if you want to give me a license *smiley face*

Yes the drivers were pretty bad, but they seem to have stabilized with 14.1 onward. And yes the stock cooler is too loud, do not get a stock cooler! Get a windforce or similar setup.

In fact the stock cooler does not have enough dissipation to keep the GPU above 900mhz for long! I have an arctic cooler with copper heatsinks on the memory. Mine can run at 1100mhz.

                    • It appears that with the new drivers things are indeed much much better than they were before.

                      Best regards,

                        • When benchmarking AMD, can you make sure that in the OpenCL device selector program, only the GPU device(s) is(are) selected? By default both GPU and CPU are enabled, I think.

Well, we've now got Vlado testing and succeeding, so that's a pretty good sign!

This whole nVidea-with-the-monopoly-on-GPU-rendering needs to stop. Let's hope this is the beginning of it.

I don't know what that is.

I just re ran the test on 3dsmax 2014 as we upgraded this week: 1min 59s at stock 1000mhz so slightly faster again.

Start menu > Programs > Chaos Group > V-Ray RT for 3ds Max > Select OpenCL devices for V-Ray RT - in the window that opens, make sure that only GPU devices are selected:
