    Re: V-Ray Jewelry

are you talking about the bezel set eternity's?

man, i have to think back, as that was my very first vray scene. I think... it was a reflection layer with anisotropic reflections set to something other than 0. 1 perhaps.. to be honest that was a year ago and the machine i did it on died shortly after that render (RIP Alienware m7700). I still have the hard drive, but havent hooked it up to get the files off of it lol.

anyway, play with the anisotropic values and highlight reflection / gloss values and subdivisions. Higher subdivisions will make for a much cleaner blurry look, but your render times will be through the roof. I think bezel ring was a 12+ hour render.

      Re: V-Ray Jewelry

Typically the thing that will cause gemstones to render black is a lack of internal reflections/refractions. This is controlled through the Max Depth parameter in Global Switches. Basically the Max Depth thing means that that will be the maximum number of reflection/refraction bounces that v-ray will trace, thus cutting off the calculations after that number is reached. Typically this results in black areas where more reflections/refractions are needed (mostly with refractions though). By default the Max Depth is set to 2, which is fine for tests, but for higher qualities a higher number is usually needed. You really won't want to set it too high, because at a certain point its spending time on calculations that don't matter. 5 is a good number to start out with and see if you need more from there.

stones are black? or stones in the ground plane reflections are black?

          Re: V-Ray Jewelry

speaking of max depth, i have found that 9 is the magic number for most higher quality settings. also increasing the cut off in the material to .001 helps as well. The stones look like they have more depth and volume to them, instead of being flat and lifeless.

thanks ill give that a try tomorrow. my problem was i was the metal was reflecting on the ground plain diamonds would render dark as if there was no background map. They look fine in the image but the reflection of the stones is black? I hope that makes sence Ill post pictures tomorrow if it doesn't.

hmmm...its looking like my default setting is .001 (but it could be different in my build), so do you mean lower it even more...to .0005 or something. I find this a very interesting way to add more depth in gems, so any more info you can give on that??

                Re: V-Ray Jewelry

ok after looking i figured out what it is. A lot of times i would use the clear glass material in the installed materials folder to start off a gemstone. Someone made that material .01 for the cut off. You are correct .001 is the default value if you create a new vray material in the material editor. I think its important to keep that .001 value or if you are starting from the clear glass material change it to .001

shwew, thought i was crazy there for a second.

Only for a second? I think alcoholics call that a "moment of clarity"

Here's a test example of needing reflection exclusions

first is a normal render, you can see the stones in the top get a little weird

second is env and direct lights only

                      third is just env.

updated with a couple swf animations. (over compressed to under a meg but just pretend they are really clean!)

I have a hot trick for you: set the environment of the ground material to white or black, like you like, and you will not see reflections of the global environment anymore.

Thanks Micha. In animation number 2 of the sapphire ring i do actually override the bg channel using the material override. The first orange ring animation that we just redid we made exactly like the first one i made many months ago. Many people were asking how it was done, so we wanted to make sure it was the same. That animation was made prior to the object reflection overrides. thus it was way up there on our feature request list.
