I do think rendering on a black background and using the layer > matting > remove black matte works almost perfectly.

I do it all with hotkeys but here's the simplest way of explainging:
Take your alpha pass and apply it to a layer mask on your RGB pass.
Rasterize the layer
Layer > matting > remove black matte.
It's not perfect but it's so close to being perfect it works (for a 5000px render in my case).

Ah ok. In vray 3 you can set your dome to invisible and set it to not affect the alpha channel so you get a proper alpha via the default rendered alpha channel. Much easier.
