Is a photon tuning problem or is only a system resources limitation of my pc?
thanks

Hi everybody,
Somebody asked for a translation of Salutos posts on the russian forum. I translated the first post (http://www.3dcenter.ru/forum/index.p...howtopic=14164) and if people here are interested I can translate the rest too.
A message to Saluto:
Privet Saluto, ya tol'ko perevodil tvoi post na angliskiy yazyk. Skazi esli ty soglasen s ostalnym perevodom.
THE TRANSLATION:
People often ask me : "What is a standard photon settings in Vray?"
Here is my answer.
Photon settings :
Bounces: 10
Auto search dist=off
SD=60
Max photons=0
Mult=1
MD=10
Convert to ir map=on
interp. samles=15
Convex hull=on
RT=0
RB=10
Subdivisions : Direct light - 3000, Vraylight - 2500
This is not a high quality settings but it works fine in 99% cases.
The most important is all the room corners have to be closed with no gaps.
Than you can set SD=80, MD=13. It does not affect the quality of the final image. But it reduces the photon map size form 379MB to 200MB.
By the way the map is so big because I am using displacement modifier (on the walls and on the carpet) and I have not turned it off for the photon calculation. Photon map calculation took 30 minutes.

To paraganek: I not against. Only you have translated very little. Without other part it is very difficult to understand essence of our method. As difference from the standard method very insignificantly. But in this difference also there is a essence. On the full FAQ there is no time. Especially soon there will be a new VRAY.

I downloaded you example scene and when I open the file there seams to be missing something - ColorCorrect.dlm
- GammaMap.dlt
- VectorNoise.dlt
I see these files in the folder for the scene, but somehow they are not loading. Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks!

you need to move them to your plugins directory..
I've never used the others, but Colorcorrect is awesomeDave Buchhofer. // Vsaiwrk

Only using Photon Map or always?

OK, it looks like somebody is still interested so here is the next part :
Bellow you can see what we get after IR map calculation:
IR map settings are for 1920x1440 image resolution:
Min rate= -5
Clr=0.3
Nrm=0.25
Dist=0.1
Max rate=-2
HSph=80
Interp. samples=15
Secondary bounces mult=0.85 (could be even higher, it only makes the photon map bigger, I do not have any problems with color bleeding. I do not know why )
Interpolation type: least squares fit
Sample lookup: Precalc'd overlapping
Rendered on Dual Athlon 1800 2Gb
Render time of this image was 2 hours 30 minutes. AA - adaptive 0 2.
Setting it to 1 2 will really speed it up, about 1 hour 20 minutes render time. We will get slightly worse sampling quality but still suficient for standard prints.

...and next one...
Just for an example - an image rendered using photon map with insufficient number of subdivision.
The settings are all the same. I have only changed the number of subdivisions.
Direct Light - 1000, VrayLight - 500. Photon map size - 78 MB.
Now you can see the difference.
The corners are not smoothly shaded and color spots are clearly visible.
If we calculate the IR map now, a lot of artefacts will show up in the image. Particularly in corners.
