Well, based on many requests I am translating the rest of Saluto's posts from http://www.3dcenter.ru/forum/index.p...howtopic=14164

Just one more example. SD=15, MD=3. Subdivs: Direct-1000, VrayLight-500. You can see the Subdivisions are too low. But the size of the Photon Map is already 191 MB and there is no way to get an acceptable quality by making it even bigger. There is just not enough memory for it.

Uriy: What would we be doing without you Saluto :P
Forgot to ask why there is Max Photos=0 ?
Thank again.

Saluto: I just prefer crisp corners. Max Photons option makes them blurry.

Sing: Thank you Saluto for sharing your knowledge. This is what I would like to know:
1. Do you use Skylight ? If so what Skylight Multiplier do you use ? (Maybe I should better ask what is the relationship between the Skylight Multiplier and VrayLight Size/Mult.)
2. Do you set Store with IR map ON or OFF ?

Saluto:
1. I always use Skylight. The Multiplier generally varies but I use 1 most of the time. There is no relationship you are talking about. I tweak the VrayLight Multipliers with GI turned OFF.
2. Store with IR map also changes from case to case but I mostly turn this OFF. I rarely set Store with IR map ON for VrayLights in windows. Generally I turn those ON only for lights I do not need shadows from (hidden ceiling illumination for example).

Visualizator:
Thank you Saluto for all the explanations, I have 2 more questions:
1. I rendered the scene, it was all great, then I put the curtains and realized no photons were entering the room. I have the VrayLight outside of the window. The curtains are nothing special, one-sided object of course and the photon map rendered out completely black.
2. The photon map consist of all the photons from a specific light source.
If I add any new objects to the scene do I have to recalculate the photon map considering the light setting has not changed ?
I tested that and it looked fine but I was rendering it in low resolution only.

Saluto:
1. I use my own special material for my curtains (used in my latest projects) so I can not comment on yours. What curtains are you actually talking about ? All my curtains are one-sided objects, the really thin ones have normals pointing out of the window (only in case of a direct light source - Sun, otherwise they are flipped pointing inside the room), thicker curtains have always normals pointing inside the room. I also have the really thin curtains excluded from VrayLight (in case of a Direct Light they are excluded entirely, with no Direct Light in scene casting shadows is excluded only).
2. It is a good practise to recalculate the photon map if anything changes in a scene. This is especially true in case of adding new objects to the scene.
