My brain is beginning to hurt trying this - I have adjusted just about every param I could think of. Im on 109r and steadily going crazy.

    Steps:

    1) Create rectangle in viewport with default lighting. UVW segs=15x15x15 segs. Generate mapping coordinates checked on by default.

    2) Materials Editor. Select Vraymtl. Scroll down to Maps. Add Gijs' Displacement map. Tile to 4.0/2.0. Default settings. No other changes.

    3) Apply VrayDisplacementMod to rectangle. 3D Mapping=on. Amount=1, Shift=0, FaceSubdiv=32, Useobjmtl=on, Keepcontinuity=on, edgethresh=5.

    4) Create camera (but doesnt seem to make any difference.) Render camera view with or without Displacement Map checked in Common Parameters.

    Results:

Displacement works to a small degree. I'm not getting defined ridges as my sines and cosines blend between each other. Results are not clean. There's no transparency either - not sure if this is something that needs to be put into the Translucency Map. and if so, how to set it up.

lower your edge treshold, then it should render fine

Do what gijs said and adjust the map tiling and then you're there! It's because you make it that big that you see the artifacts. I'm not sure if gijs's example has transparancy, it could simply be the reflections you're seeing (they're white and the background is white). Not sure though!

I Think i have the same problem
My render relieve does not seem leaked as of lupaz.
I did it with vray mat wood in defuse map, and Gijs map in the displace 3D....

wouter... share ur scene pliz... i'd like to know how u did knot mapping.

Ulises, your teapot is really good.. how u did this transparence??
              if possible share it.

Or send me email pliz.... sandra@reiki-ba.com.br

              Thanks a lot to all.

Render times are pretty high with this displacement. I'd imagine throwing in opacity would just increase this time tremendously. Is that normal or is there anyway to make it faster? Also, how do you do that transparency?

have you guys tried using the water level to create a pseudo clipmap? thatll give you the gaps between the slats. or whatever you call them.

It looks like ulises did something like that, I just want to note that I didn't and it doesn't apear to me that Lupaz did.

One other point jujubee, you are stretching the map too much imo. If you want it to look like that, you should create a new map with that shape. The vertical and horizontal strokes should be more or less equal in width.

There is a topic about opacity maps somewhere else. Vlado noted that you should turn off filtering for the opacity map, and not use standard materials.

percy thanks.. water level makes difference in the box.
                      but.. knot is terrible

Ok here's my scene, I named it 'Gijs' as I have nothing to do with the displacement process, I just did what Gijs told us.

                        http://users.pandora.be/stor1/vray/gijs.zip

It's max5, vray 1.46.04 and if you hit render you should get this:

Sandra, for the torus knot, turn on generate mapping coordinates in the torus properties. For the rest the displacement is ok, but you need to adjust the map tiling! The relationship between width and height is simply wrong for this map.
