  • Windows 10 upgrade

How are people approaching this upgrade ? I have 9 render nodes and 1 main system. I'll need to upgrade all systems at some point but I don't think I would ever upgrade until I knew the operating system was reliable for production.

So basically we have a year to upgrade all windows 7/8 systems to windows 10 for free. Are you guys that have tested windows 10 happy to do this ? It's a lot of money to have to shell out after this free period if the new OS is not good enough.
    Regards

Personally, I am waiting until the last second. I heard things about Direct X 12, but other than that, I am not sure what I'll gain.

reminds me of a friend who was an avid pc gamer. his brother disparagingly called his pc his "square-headed girlfriend"

10-foot barge-pole, and all that. Going to wait a good few months, probably 6+ before upgrading. Would like to be sure that all the main packages work solidly with it first. Happy to let other people bug test

I've been using windows 10 for about the past 4-5 months without issue. It's been just as stable as Windows 7. I've been really impressed so far. I just don't know if I'm going to "upgrade" the OS or just try and get an ISO and install fresh. I've never been a fan of "upgrading" from one OS to another. Some programs will need to be reinstalled to work properly. So all of my Windows 10 testing has been done under the condition of a fresh OS install each time, no upgrades.

i am assuming that the "free upgrade" will give you the option to create an iso/backup dvd and do a clean install?

I read that Windows 10 will be pushed out through a Windows Update. So, I wouldn't be surprised to wake up one day and it'll be there. I also read that Windows Update will be on and can't be turned off in Windows 10.

it will be automatically downloaded to your system via windows update, if you have chosen to accept the free upgrade, but you will be able to choose if and when it is installed. also, iirc there is already a patch that allows you to disable the forced windows update feature.

There's been a setting in there for several months that allows you to schedule updates and one of the settings is to do nothing until prompted. Which is how I have it setup. Works as expected. No issues.

EDIT: Most of the stuff I've "read" regarding Windows 10 is either crap or hyped up beyond belief. Most things are just misunderstood or non-issues for most users. I don't know how quickly I will rollout Windows 10 at the office and renderfarm...too many unknowns at this point and right now, things just work!

So are you using V-Ray 3.1 on Windows 10 without issue? I'm using Maya 2016 and I am considering the Windows 10 upgrade.

Unfortunately we are still on VRay 2.40.4.
But everything is working just fine for me.

NOTE: I can't stress this enough! I started with a fresh install of Windows 10. I did NOT do the upgrade! So I don't know what potential problems may arise by doing the upgrade. Typically if there are issues, a simple reinstall of that program will likely fix the issues.

That would seem to make sense. Always best to have solid archives of all critical software for this very reason. Starting fresh is often a much more efficient method instead of tirelessly troubleshooting to no avail. I've found a fresh do over can be done in less than 4 hours whereas chasing down an elusive software issue on a well worn in environment might take days.

Hair and Fur (WSM) with a vray texture in the MR slot does not work on windows 10 with 3dsmax 2014 and vray 3.2.00.2. It just renders as if it does not exist, although you can actually see it and work with it in the view port.

I will upgrade to 3.2.00.3 now and see if it fixes that. Otherwise I need to upgrade max.

EDIT: hrmm that is strange, after loading up the textures and selecting the modifier but not making any changes... hair and fur is rendering fine
