  • VRayEnmesh modifier

VRayEnmesh modifier “coats” the object’s surface with a repeating pattern. Useful for chainmails, rattan furniture, fabric close-ups and so on.

Unlike instancing, there is no extra memory used for the repeating geometry (only the source mesh is loaded). That means you can have billions of polygons without any impact on the memory consumption.

    Known limitations:
    • limited vrscene export and rendering (WIP)
    • no V-Ray GPU support
    • some artifacts in certain cases (fixes incoming)

If it was that easy, it would have already been done

Sounds great. Is GPU support coming down the road or is it one of these things like caustics that will likely never make it?

      Hey BBB3

GPU support for VRayEnmesh is planned, it will arrive at a later stage

That’s great news. Thanks. Hopefully with random rotations for variation!

Just installed Max 2023 to test this out. Works great. Haven't found (stability) issues (yet), and works very smoothly in IPR even when I crank up the tiling and poly count on the object to tile. Very very cool. This is going to be huge for fabrics and the likes.

One thing I notice is that the more you tile, the lower you need to go in height % (might be intended ofcourse). But maybe it's a good idea, to have some sort of ratio lock, if it's possible to have some formula behind it.

I also tried adding a second object, but what if I want to have different tiling or height options for the second/third/... object? Adding another VrayEnmesh modifier on top doesn't work and it reverts back to the original geometry.
          A.

I don't see this happening in the near future It sounds useful, but very messy and a lot can go wrong

I had that same remark; technically multiple modifiers can be made to work. Not sure if it can be done for V-Ray 6, but definitely something to consider.

              Best regards,

Don't love the name of this... Max is doing MNMesh stuff in newest version so sounds too similar to me

This is great modifier its got so many uses I am enjoying playing with and trying to break it.. Would it be possible to have a smooth option? I have facets with lower number of tiles - I can reduce this by adding a turbosmooth although I do need 3 iterations.

so.. what "Enmesh" means? How about "GeoSpinkler" or "GeoCoat". Haha

Same issue here - if its not intended of course - a simple sphere with low segments will be faceted instead of smooth for example.

Isn't this sort of normal behaviour?
