Yep that's been my experience but hey if someone can show me a good example id love it!

I just thought of one... Cor-Ten/Weathering steel. If you could do this procedurally, it would be amazing.

I can't wait for this tutorial package to come out, any idea how long it will be?

            Working on a few atm.
I like the idea of the weathered steel, I've never really tackled a decent rust material so it's going to take some time to get production ready.

I've got some pretty decent looking vray fog tests working too. I've managed to reproduce some cool jade materials but not exactly sure how they handle in different lighting yet. More experimentation needed but for those who work in print and don't care about render times (As you are probably using a 15+ node farm) then it could be pretty valuable.

There is hours and hours of footage. I have to condense it but I cover everything that's needed in production for live jobs. I'm not even close to finishing but if I can get the material library built, I can begin releasing it in stages potentially.

              Another shader in the works.

              Grant,
how do you achieve that kind of "spectral" effect around the highlights? I mean the colored halo around the bright reflections. Don't know how to describe it.

I managed to get a sort of similar effect by doing it the way we used to have to cheat dispersion - a blend material with the rgb separated and slightly different settings for each to split the colors. Haven't been able to get results anywhere near as good as that myself though, so either I'm wrong or simply not good at it.

Tried it, but didn't get a good result either. Anyway, looking forward to Grants tutorials on this.

The chocolate and caramel shaders look good. Interesting how it changes when cold/frozen. I think it's tiny drops of water/condensation?
Out of interest, how did you model those toppings? Poly modelling?

Definitely still progressing, I've been on holiday for a few weeks so need to get back into it.

Droppings were hand modeled and the spectral effect is explained in my 3dsmax feature request thread
