  • I also read it loads faster.
This is pretty awesome too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgQEgM1CUF8
    And this too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FXnvXKUSj0
It also has improved boolean operations.
The new bevel profile is pretty neat.

But not being able to select by material? hmm a tough one.

It only happen if you use SE based Select Object dialog.
If you use legacy one, I think it is OK.

Also.. there are a lot of scrpt to use, too

      • Some comments here seem to be pretty strong against 2017 though:

-you can do a google search on the Area for max 2017 problems.. A bit frightening!
        And

My install of 2017 is completely ornamental for now. I keep using 2016, which has all I need and hardly ever crashes.

You can not just look at the title.
You need to see all the details.

It could be a bug. But there might be work around.
It could be a bug which it may be there even before 2017.
It could be a OS/video driver issue.
It could be a bad installation.
It could be an anti virus.
It could be an user error.
It could be an workflow change.
It could be an intentional change because other user requested it.(When max dev change the deselect behavior of CTRL, I was really upset. But, apparently ot was requested by others users. Heck there is even request to change the default fps to 25fps.)

I think I mentioned this in other thread.
          But, this is my approach.

Yes, might get 10 new bugs. But, if upgrade solve 20 more bugs.
Then I think it is worth to upgrade.

For example, 2017 has very important Track VIew bug fix for us.
That fix alone is worth to upgrade for us.

Also as you mentioned, you will get a few features, too.
You need to evaluate if that features are worth it.

For example. the new UV editor may looks same.
But, it is pretty much re-written.
It is now base on DX can handle 100 thousand verts.
The brand new ABF based peel is really good.
Packing also has a brand new algorithm to give meaningful result.
You can also use same sub object selection method you can use in Editable Poly for UV.
          and more...

If you don't need all that, well.. then you don't need to upgrade.
But, if you think it would help your work. Why not?

I has been using/beta testing 2017 more than year.
At least I have not have a show stopper compare to 2016.

SP3 is currently being tested on the Beta site and they have fixed this issue thankfully. It shouldn't be long before it's available to the public

But we are not supposed to talk about anything we know from the Beta Bruce. Another great concept straigh from the corporate way of thinking! Because they are listed on the stock market they have to work in secret!

When beta testing Blender you can speak to anyone about anything without worry.

                What do you prefer?

Anything about fixing the problems when opening previous versions scenes (2014)?
It was mentioned here and I saw it too. It's like some geometry gets an xform applied automatically when opened in 2017: some objects appear rotated.

                    • Everything, for the most part, is working great for me. So far, 2017 is by far the most stable release. Plus the icons scale for 4K monitors.

The selection mode with preview is pretty cool. The sub object shortcut that we have to create is not so impressive. Anyway, Max is still great for some surgical modeling operations and for that I will keep my max 2016 or 2017 all my life!

But talking about startup times, I did a small comparison here (just for fun): 3ds Max 2016 vs 3ds Max 2017 vs Houdini 15.5.565 vs Blender 2.78.

Yes cause for many max users, it's a love/hate relationship! For me a max upgrade is always such an hassle with all the plugins I need, it really must be worth it. But since I'm a 3D app geek and always want to get the latest technology I always try to upgrade as fast as possible but in the case of max 2017 I just didn't succeed yet but I must admit I was a bit distracted integrating Houdini and Blender to my pipeline.

And I'm so amazed how easy it is to upgrade Houdini. Everyday you have new versions bugs are fixed daily (see the changelog here) no plugins needed and you can even install it in one place accessed by all the render farm! When you know only one app you have no choice but make with it but looking around sometimes make us realize when things are not optimal.

                          • Bobby, Jstrob: For Max, I'm still on the old maintenance scheme and so far they haven't kicked me out. So I pay in the region of €600 for a yearly upgrade and I get to keep it whatever happens. It's not easy for me to switch to a different package because I model assets for sale and offering a max version is a must. But the minute they force me into the rental scheme, that's when I'll leave.
