  • Stopping a rendering

I have a scene that was working fine, but now I can't stop renderings. I have been hitting the STOP VFB button for about 10 minutes and it will not stop. I have been having to kill MAX.

It would be best if you can send us that scene to test it here. You can create a support ticket or post it here.

I would, but it is a large model. It's causing me a lot of time and headache.

I got sidetracked and came back to kill MAX, but V-Ray did stop by them. So, it looks like I need to be a little more patient than 10 minutes (being sarcastic)

I think it's been that way always.... its only at the beginnig of LC calculation, when it looks 'stuck'. Its normal for LC I think when the scene is very heavy.

The memory release process can take so long in some cases, especially for more complex scenes. You can check the memory processes in the task manager when the render is canceled. I believe there are additional plugins involved in this project.

This happens to us too, sporadically on larger scenes. The only way to stop it, is to kill max in my experience. It wont stop by itself (I've left it over night on one occasion).

It's strange, you can still click on and change values in the VFB, you can press stop or cancel but nothing happens. It's just stuck on building light cache. It's as if there lies some hidden error pop up window, that's waiting for you to acknowledge the render didn't start or finish because of an error.

since it is exterior I would suggest trying BF+BF on this scene if LC is slow.

It might be good to test one of this scenes here. this way we will be able to find where and why it is freezing. Can you send us a file that reproduces this behavior to support@chaosgroup.com ? Is that V-Ray Next ?

Yes, V-Ray NEXT, but it is a large scene. I'll see what I can do.

                        Vray 3.60.04.

As I mentioned it happens sporadically from file to file, hard to pin point and replicate. Stuck behind NDA too. Not much I can do to help I'm afraid

Alright Bobby, you know where to send the files for inspection if needed.

Random issues are usually hard to troubleshoot, but maybe we will have success. However, the slow down at render end/render stop is usually due to the huge amount of memory taken for the render process that need to be release. This memory can be also taken by another plugin if you use any in the scene and its memory release process can be handled either by V-Ray or the third party plugin itself.

It is my slave slowing things up. I hear my slave run for 15 minutes after every rendering is completed. After waiting 10 minutes for my V-Ray to stop, I switch over to my slave, kill it, and my main workstation stops instantly.

Is the slave powerful as your main machine ? The RAM specifically ? Is it possible that the slave machine is using the Swap file for this job ? If the slow down occurs only with this complex project. Can you track the task manager memory consumption right after the end of the rendering on the salve machine ?
