Not sure if it will work in this case, but
have you tried the "Cavity" option within Max 2010 (My personal favourite
new feature within this build). Actually it´s not a shader
but a render to texture effect. But it works quite well and as far as i can judge it does
the same as that Final Render Shader. Can be found.. "Render/Render Surface Map"
requires an "editable poly" with unwrapped uvw coordinates.
