Hello,
I’m experiencing an image flickering issue in VR with the following setup:
- Headset: VR2 with SteamVR
- Software: Vantage, fully updated
- Hardware: High-end workstation with RTX 5070 Ti, 64 GB RAM, Ryzen 9 9950X
The problem occurs when entering a room: when I rotate my head, the image “jumps” or flickers slightly. I’ve noticed this behavior mostly when using the DLSS denoiser, which is currently the only one providing a good balance between performance and quality. Other denoisers lower FPS too much and noticeably reduce image quality.
I’ve already tried changing various settings in both Vantage and the SteamVR app, including resolution, NVIDIA settings, and anti-aliasing, but the flickering persists regardless of FPS or image quality settings.
I also tested a Quest 2 a few weeks ago, and the issue did not appear, which makes me think this might be related to SteamVR or some specific Vantage configuration.
I would like to understand if this is a known issue and if there are any solutions or workarounds.
Thank you very much for your attention!
Hi giovanni_stocchero,
Stuttering/flickering can appear when the FPS is low (<24). Are you using the VR in Mono or Stereo mode? Have you tried to lower the render resolution using the resolution multiplier inside Vantage?
Also can you try to record what you are seeing in the VR headset with the Display VR view?
Best regards,
Alexander
Hi giovanni_stocchero,
Thank you for the recording, it is really helpful. It is indeed strange that you get a better experience with Stereo compared to Mono, given the fact that in Stereo you have a much lower FPS. We will try to get a hold on a PS VR2 headset AND test it on our end. We will let you know when there is some development.
Best regards,
Alexander
Good morning Alex,
the situation is really strange. For now, I will continue using Stereo mode: even with low FPS, in VR the performance drop is hardly noticeable and the visual quality still looks very good.
I’m not a VR expert, but in my opinion SteamVR might have some communication issues with Vantage. In fact, when I change Vantage’s settings, the flickering doesn’t change, while adjusting SteamVR’s settings clearly makes the flickering better or worse. I also know that SteamVR doesn’t always work perfectly with certain Steam games or applications.
Another possibility is that DLSS, by predicting or generating the next frame, could be contributing to this annoying flickering effect.
I hope these observations can be useful as feedback to further improve this amazing tool called Vantage.
Have a great day!
Hi giovanni_stocchero,
The black edges at the corners of the view when looking around quickly are indeed from the VR itself (Steam) and are not caused by the DLSS. You said that with Quest2 it was better. When you used the Quest2 did you use the Meta Link app or the SteamVR app? Can you please test with the Quest again but with the SteamVR OpenXR runtime?
Best regards,
Alexander
Hi Alex,
yes, oddly enough, with the Meta Quest 2 I was having more issues when using Stereo mode, while Mono mode worked much better.
The Quest 2 was connected via the Meta app using Wi-Fi Link.
I don’t think I can test the Quest 2 with the Steam OpenXR app because I don’t have the Meta cable to connect it directly to the PC. Is it possible to do this via Wi-Fi as well? I’m honestly not sure.
