Flickering/shimmering to reflective mats and shadows

Hi

I am rerendering an interior with the same settings that I used to create other perfect renders of the space prior to installing 1.5. Below are the settings and I would appreciate it if anyone can help me to stop the flickering / shimmering effects that are affecting some reflective materials and shadowed areas.

Thanks

ive been having same issues as of late for some reason. I even tried a test using QMC,LC and it was still there. Not something I’ve seen until lately. Haven’t resolved it yet myself.

Are you using the old saved imaps and LC’s or new ones?

One tip (correct me if I am wrong) - make sure interpolation on glossy materials is turned off.

do all your render slaves have the same version of vray? and can the all see the saved irmap and light cache?

Thanks for your replies.

I am using new LC and Irrad maps.

The interpolation for glossy materials is unticked.

All the machines have the same version of VRay and they can all see the LC and Irrad maps - I still get the same problem when 1 machine renders the animation.

I turned off Detail Enhancement but it made no difference.

The only thing I can think of is that I am not using a Vray physical camera ???

it wont make a difference if your using a standard max camera. There must be something else affecting it

gosh, where’s Vlado when you need him! Have you tried a different AA filter (say area) - I have noticed a few odd things with reflections when using sharp filters.

Most certainly, if Vlado is about that would be good !

I haven’t tried a different AA for this specific animation.

can u show us a sample of the shimering flicker?

its a little vague to try nd figure out…i d say strip it down to a mid gray material and see if there is no flickering…then work it out from there…

try using adaptive qmc - 2-6 mitchel netravali.
we found that less flickering then adaptive subdevision.

What is the best codec to compress a quicktime video for sending across the net ?

I always like Sorenson

Thats what I use but is there anything else that creates good quality/file size ? Possibly, Divx or Xvid ?

have you quicktime pro? you can export straight from there at low settings…

i d use xvid!

I don’t have QT Pro.

I tend to have bother with using Xvid and the more obscure codecs. Also, I prefer to output from the Ram Player but it doesn’t export to .mov.

I export to .mov from ram player - in there you can change to sorensen codec and reduce the quality for file size. On Max 8

QT with the H.264 codec is great for file size (tends to do some kind of gamma or brightness adjustment sometimes though).

I think you won’t get it very small without QT Pro though (only $30).

Depending on the quality/size, I would try to avoid AA on an animation as it can produce more noticeable noise/flickering in an animation.
